westfield auger

How do you keep a westfield hydraulic lift auger from settling on the bin . I have shut the gate valve and even unhooked hoses from tractor but it still settles . is there a trick to this that i dont know?

Sounds like oil is getting past the cylinder seals. Bet if you raise it all the way up, you'll shoot oil out the cylinder breather. Rebuilding the cylinder would be the best way. Maybe you can build some kind of brace to hold it at the hight you need.

It could be the shut-off valve is leaking too. Are the hydraulic lines still connected to the tractor? If so, could be a leak there also.

If the cylinder(s) aren't leaking, then start looking other places as the oil is going somewhere or could there be air in the system?

If you can reach the cylinder when it is extended to the right height. Place a angle iron over the ram and clamp or wire it so it stays in place. This would be a temp fix until you have time to rebuild the cylinder.

Robert Anthony Anderson has the correct answer. They're called "Transport locks". Very common equipment.

I feel your pain. we have an old Westfield MK 13 X 61 with rust pitted transport lift cylinders that leakdown. Very expensive to replace and new ones rust immediatly out in the weather because they mount the cylinders shaft up.

If only westfield had mounted those cylinders shaft down, rain could not get in and they would last forever.
Our "fix" was to attach a chain to the top of the A frame and welded a ring to the end of the boot so we can hydraulicly position the auger where it needs to be on the bin, then snug the chain using a chain binder connected to the boot and the chain. No more leakdown and a relativly cheap easy fix.
