Tony, We do the water harvest thing too.
Those pickers are actually made in Mass. They are called Darlingtons. You can still buy then new today, though mine are probably older than I am. Anyone want to guess what a new unit costs?

Most all fresh fruit from the west and east coast is picked with some form of this machine. In Wisc. its a special water harvester for fresh (slush or paddle wheel I believe they call it) - The fruit would then need to be dried.

Regular water harvest is for processes fruit - juice, sauce, etc...

Did Furford pickers ever get back to the east coast? They were built by Carl Furford, in Grayland, Washington, and were used by everybody out here, at least when I was involved with the industry in the '70's and 80's. Don't know, maybe everything has changed by now.

cbbc,

Nice photos. Love cranberries - eat them right out of the sack. Interesting... I too, thought they were harvested water bog style.

So you are saying that bags of "fresh" cranberries are picked dry like this? And only berries for juice, or jellied/sauce are picked wet?

I know of some Furford pickers here in Mass. I spent the better part of one rebuilding about 15 of them. I don"t know how old they were but they had Clinton engines on them. jF

Furfords are in use in Mass. Hotflashjr posted a pic last year of a field with them - probably modified.
I had a friend rebuild a coupled Darlingtons with the Clinton engine last year...he got tired ofthem not starting and replaced with Hondas...

Yes, likely the fresh fruit in the bag is dry harvested...unles they come from Wisc.
Fresh fruit isn't the most interesting thing to watch being picked - kind of like watching 5 guys mowing the lawn...
I will post more pics if something interesting comes up. When water harvest starts I will post as well. Grant

Looks like a very labor-intensive process. I can see why they are so expensive in the store. Can a small farmer still make money on cranberries, or are most of the berries done by huge operations?

Looks to me like you need to hook at least a couple of those things together and throw a seat behind them...!!

Maybe go a step further and add a little more hp and a cart to haul them.
