I am in Michigan. If I decide to buy a truck from Kentucky and drive it home, what kind of insurance would I need?

I do it all the time, I call my own local agent with the VIN number and description and he has me covered over the phone. I've done this literally dozens of time all over the US (Semi Trucks, Cars, RV's) and never had a license plate or temporary tag but do have the Bill of Sale and Title and as mentioned INSURANCE before I hit the road. HOWEVER dont do as I do, do as I say lol get a temporary tag allowing you to drive it before you hit the road...

You would need some kind of temporary tag to drive through certain states - Colorado, for example. Highway patrolman stopped me on a Sunday morning; told me that I could only drive as the county seat up the road and wait until Monday morning to get a temporary tag at the court house.

I just kept on driving through the state and through Nebraska and didn't get stopped again.

Call your own insurance company and get the coverage. I do it over the phone and then stop by the office to get the new insurance cards. It will cover you and the truck no matter where you drive it. Usually you need insurance from the state where you have your driver's license (but that may vary).

I live most of the time in NY but keep a truck and car in Michigan. When I go to Michigan, I call my agent in NY and put insurance on the vehicles. If fact - I cannot get the insurance in Michigan unless I get a Michigan drivers license.

Watch out for title requirements from whatever state you buy the vehicle (not where you're going to register it). I got in a mess with a truck I bought in PA. Paid for it, got a written bill-of-sale and a signed title. Then when I tried to register it in NY - no good!. That because PA law requires all titles get signed in front of a notary. I was ticked since I'm in NY - but NY honors whatever law exists where the title came from. So, I had to track the owner down in PA, get a new title signed in front of a notary. If I had been unable to find the seller - I would of not been able to register.

Like others have said, just call your insurance agent and ask them. I've bought several vehicles across state lines and in every case, I was fine. My particular insurance company gives me 72 hours to report a "new to me" vehicle. I've never tested that though as I just call my agent when I take possession. Never had a problem with tags, a bill of sale has always been enough.

i would think only your insurance in your home state would be good. tags /tax deal would dend on wheather state(s) were title holding states, and wheather tags were issued to idividuals or the vehicle. here for instance we are not title holding state and tags stay with the vehicle, freind here bought a boat built in MO that just the opposite,at that time at least they were a title holding state and tags were issued to owner and moved between vehicles.he had to pay excise tax and tags for both states.IF the dealer had shipped it in from the manufacturer in mo he wouldnt have had to tag and title it in both states. you may call the dmv in ky and ask about this.if in ky the current owner has to remove the tag you couldnt legaly drive it without one,so you would have to either register that truck first in your state and get a tag to put on it or register it there and again when you got home. what ive found anyway.to my knowledge theres no restriction on interstate travel as far as insurance goes.

I also am in Michigan. Did the same thing in June of 2011. Bought a truck in North Carolina. Called my agent, he said I should put insurance on it for the drive home. Gave him the vin number, he faxed me a proof of insurance. The previous owner left the plates on it for the drive home so I didn't have a problem that way. When I got home just transferred the title to my name and put my plates on it.

i bought a truck from NH, i'm in NY. got the title signed over to me and sent in the mail (certified). called ins agent, got faxed the proof of ins card. go to DMV with paperwork, do the reg, get plates. got get truck with brand new plates & drive home. simple.

Best thing to do, call your insurance company. Whenever I purchase a vehicle, I call my insurance company and they have always attached the new vehicle to an existing policy. That has been my experience. Your experience, or the experience of others? Call your insurance company tonight, tomorrow is the best answer.

I'm not sure about the tags, but whatever you do contact your insurance agent to make sure you are covered. I've called and added vehicles over the phone before I left with them. I've never bought one out of state, but I have driven plenty of vehicles home with no tags as long as I had insurance coverage. Having to straighten out a tag issue is a headache and might cost you a little money, but getting in a wreck and not having insurance coverage would be worse than terrible.

State Farm gives you coverage for 10 days on new purchases. Coverage is what you have on file so if you have no collision, you'd better get some.

Other thing on buying out of state, you have to get an inspection certificate here in TX. and take it with you to the county tax office to register it in this state. As I recall it's a lot more complicated than the annual state inspection.
