Alternator ripoff

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Duramax 6.6 liter diesel that I use to
haul the 560 and M. It has dual alternators from the factory
and the local parts guy cannot find the correct alternators. I
spoke with a diesel mechanic who believes the amp output is
different for each alternator. Local Chevy dealer quoted me
$800 for the two alternators but would not give me the part
numbers. Your help with this would save my paycheck.
Thanks, Matt

Your first mistake is a Chevy (just kidding)! Why don't you find a company that rebuilds automotive equipment and see what they can do. Try also a heavy truck shop. I think a dealer who won't give out a part number is a real S.O.B. and would never get my business again. You might mention that to the salesman next time you're on the lot looking at trucks.

400 each ? if so , not out of line .anything electrical Gm/Isuzu is out of site . My cost on one for a 2000 NPR was $695. Dealer was only source . I kept the core to rebuild .

Don't you have a generator repair shop around?
We get everything fixed locally for less than half what new is.

Try Here! http://www.gmpartsdirect.com This is a wholesale direct site for GM. Look around. You will come apon a place where you provide your VIN number. This way you get the correct parts for your truck. My truck has dual alternators. It is what comes on the "Snow Plow" package. Dealer wanted a total of about $1,000.00 to install tow mirrors on my 2011 3500HD. It was something like $650.00 for the mirrors, plus labor, plus re-programming of computor. What a bunch of bull. I was told about the GMparts direct. Long story short, I purchased genuine GM tow mirrors for approx: $350.00. Installed them myself. They simply bolt on. Never had to touch the computor. The new mirrors plugged into the same socket as the old small mirrors. Now I know why dealers are dubbed "Stealers". I saved $650.00

We are a small town but there are still two rebuilding shops. They have been able to rebuild 3 obscure japanese alternators for me. One was 30$ there vs a 900$ replacement. They've also fixed me up on anything domestic thats odd ball.

Try these guys.

My buddy had the alternator on his Cat Skid steer quit today. He called NAPA for a replacement, the price was over $300.00. He called Cat and the price was $185.00 It pays to shop around.

I think I would have the alternaters tested off the vehicle.

$1200 for an internally excited Bosch alternator on a Lexion Combine and it doesn't look any different from any other alternator. Jim

Before I bent over & took it, I would bring out the welder & a few scraps & put some Delco 10SI units on it. I have put them on Fords, so it ain't rocket science!

Some dealers do have an attitude and figure they own a franchise and don't want to provide anything that resembles customer service. Some of it is the moral quality of people that end up in the Auto industry where the pay plan might be $40/ a car and 20% of what you steal. Some of it is driven by manufacturers sticking the dealers on warranty claims, problems and unrealistic sales goals. Started with old Henry Ford back in the 20's, a recession hit and he got caught low on capital, he forced inventory on dealers and added dealers to compete with existing dealers basically forcing the dealers to carry Ford through the panic. But a lot of it comes strictly from the customer who walks in and expects you to provide goods and services to them without a profit, when you deal with customers like that it's no wonder how folks who are the best liars are the successful dealers. And is it any worse than some of the attitudes displayed by union and municipal workers and officials? Or even some of the NFPA, ASME or NEC requirements that establish a competency, certification or license to perform tasks and then the holders of these licenses or certifications close ranks and seem to be able to dictate terms and conditions and prices that are higher than the skill level might otherwise dictate? Example is in the Alarm & sprinkler industry NFPA (fire protection) dictates alarm and sprinkler requirements, the manufacturers make proprietary systems, meaning only their service branches or franchised dealers can program, repair or purchase parts for the system tying you to their repair service and monitoring company, the per hour repair cost for a technician is 30% higher than technicians of similar skill levels in other industries AND they will only work under their contract/agreement terms limiting their total liability to an amount less than the cost of a service call and forces the building owner to accept terms and liability conditions not favorable to the building owner. One major alarm manufacturer requires your liability insurance is primary to their workman's compensation insurance if their employee gets hurt on your property. Yet we keep running to the big box stores and national/regional retailers selling out our locally owned businesses in many cases for less than 5%.

I would have your alternators checked for output at your local starter, generator and alternator repair shop. We have one about 5 miles from where I live. Hal
