Not with the 17 Hornet, but my TC Contender rifle is chambered in 17 Remington Fireball. I've been really happy with the Fireball, it's deadly for woodchucks.

The 17 Hornady Hornet should perform close to the 17 Fireball, even though it has a lot less powder capacity. Both stand head and shoulders above the anemic and overrated 17 HMR. Had the Hornet been available as a standard chambering when I put together my Fireball, I might have considered going with it, as it should be slightly quieter.

The 22 Hornet case is known to be difficult to handload, and I assume the same holds true for the 17 HH. If you intend to handload, I'd say the 17 Fireball is a better choice. But if you want to use factory ammo, 17 Fireball factory ammo is ridiculously overpriced.

I have the 17/223 wildcat lots of empty ammo cases around and is actually faster than the rem because of shorter neck and sharper case angle. It is load though but a lot of fun to shoot in my 1968 TC Contender. Serial number 1348.

Splitting hairs and trying to build sales with the guys who have to have the latest and greatest.
Stick with the .22 rim fire or 17 rim fire and then the .223 .

I have one ordered, but so far haven't scored one. I've always been a fan of the 22 Hornet, and just can't wait for the 17 version. Have ammo, waiting on Savage.

Hey Walt. If yours is a 1968, what year would serial # 12574 be? I bought this Contender about 2 years ago, and just love to shoot it. I liked it so well that I bought another last spring. #2 is a generation 2 Contender.

B&D, rimfire will kill woodchucks reliably with a head shot only. .223 is loud, and the bullets are prone to richochet, neither of which is desirable in a populated area. Any 17 centerfire is going to be loud (bullets are going over mach 3), but not as loud as .223. And 17 caliber bullets usually explode on impact, making richochets unlikely.

There is a place for unpopular calibers, although it's true that firearms makers introduce new cartridges to pump up gun sales.

Walt, sounds like a hot setup. Just to be clear, my rifle is chambered in .17 Remington FIREBALL, not the hotter .17 REMINGTON. The .17 Fireball is a necked-down .221 Fireball, similar to the wildcat .17 Mach IV.

If I ever burn out my Contender barrel, I suppose I can always rechamber it in a hotter cartridge like your 17/223. But that won't be for a long time.

For the price of a set of dies compared to having to buy RF ammo...makes sense to get the CF Hornet version.

Of course I forget, some people don't reload.

Are you comparing .223 noise with a shorty 12", 16.5" or 18.5" Thompson Contender barrel to the 17 ceterfires? Or a 26" barrel on the .223 ?
It's surprising the difference in muzzle blast with a few more inches of barrel.

Actually, my Contender's 17 Fireball barrel is 24 inches. Not nearly as loud as an AR-15 with a 20" barrel. Of course the most obnoxious guns on the range are the CAR-15s with their recoil compensators that blast the next guy over.
