Tractor rides

I went on a tractor ride last Saturday with 15 other tractors. They ran 10 to 15 mph. The 1941 Farmall H I was driving did great on leveler ground, but on the steeper hills I had to downshift to 4th gear and couldn't keep up. The other tractors were Farmall M's, some John Deere B's, 620's, 720's and some newer smaller tractors. What would be a good 50's or early 60's vintage tractor similar to or smaller than the H that could keep pace with the other tractors?

A Farmall H will blow most of them into the weeds for speed. Can not imagine a grade on a public road that a H would not climb in fifth gear.

My FIL says it's a kerosene engine with flat dome pistons and lower compression. It has a small auxillary tank for gasoline to start it and warm it up to run on kerosene. It's being run on gasoline now. I would try larger sleeves and domed pistons but hate to alter it from it's original state. Do you think that would increase power enough to climb the hills? Hills in southeastern Ohio are steep and often a 1/2 mile or more long. We all drive 4 wheels drive SUV's and pickup trucks.

I would not worry about keeping the original pistons in it. Do the changes that make it a fun tractor for you.

My H has overbore flattops in it and really snorts, will update to fire craters sometime.

I'm guessing your H is in need of some work.

My 53SH with fresh 169cu will run hard and fast in 5th with +-30 people on a hay rack/hay ride. We don't have any real steep grades here.

It will plow new sod in 2nd and previously plowed ground in 3rd with no problem.

No ballast in the wheels. 1 set of wheel weights, front wheel weights and frame weights.

A good running H should go up and down hills with no problem unless they are really biiigggg. Distillate or not.

saw a farmall 400 I think, had a chrysler small block and auto trans hooked up to the input on the transmission.heard she would haul chopper boxes 45 M.P.H. if you had the nerve to run it that fast

I'd say tune it up before trading it in.

Guess it depends on the hill, but generally speaking you shouldn't have to downshift to get up a hill.

Your H is definitely getting tired if it won't go up hills in 5th on its own.

Even if you just freshen the engine up with new pistons/rings/sleeves of the "correct" type, it will have a LOT more power.

Why would you hate to alter the tractor from it's original worn out state? What good is it like it is? No one is going to be able to see new firecrater oversize pistons.

The ignition timing is retarded (too slow). Advance the timing up to where it should be and that H will keep right up with anything else.

It should pull itself in 5th. I pulled my 25' bean head up and over a decent bridge with this one in 5th. It is a little hot though, it dyno'd at 35. Yes I dyno'd an H. It's probably my favorite tractor.
