center pivot question

I have an 8 inch well at 40 foot depth run by an electric 12 h.p. motor. The gear head is belt driven from the motor. It is rated at 850 gpm and I found a pivot rated at 250 gpm. I could only get 35 rows on wide open with pipe and was wondering if this pump will have the pressure to run through a 1/4 mile of underground and 1/4 mile of pivot. I know I can re nozzle it but the dealers around here want to sell you submersable well pumps etc to get more psi and volume and I'd like to use whats there if possible. Anyone have experience with anything like this? Thanks.

You will need two things 1-a pump curve to match it to 2-the restriction
you'll have to figure out. You center pivot is rated at 250 gpm but at
what pressure? Add that pressure (converted to feet head) to the
difference in height of the discharge of the center pivot (in feet) plus
the friction in the pipe (number of feet x coefficient/foot plus
additional coefficient for each elbow again converted to feet head)
compare this number to the pump's chart to figure out if you have the HP,
if the pump is below it's stall pressure and what your actual GPM is
against that resistance.

You really gotta find somebody to come look at it. If that pivot has high pressure nozzles, 12hp won't do it, and you don't want it anyways. If it's low pressure, it might, but I'm betting your pump isn't right or big enough. Also, from your well head, is there additional rise? Size of underground pipe? Is it able to handle the pressure load of a sprinkler, or would it need replaced? So many questions. Finally 250 gpm on a 1/4 mile pivot isn't much water. Would you irrigated a full 120 acres, or just a part of that? Just things to think about.

Don't forget the bowls. :>)

A two-stage bowl setup just isn't gonna cut it.

Yeah, 12 horse will get it to the surface from 40' and that's about it.

Went to the well man today and he's thinking rebowl and a 30 h.p. hollow shaft motor and get a pivot and put a sprinkler package on it for the gpm. A pivot/ well company is thinking a submesible well and trade in the good stuff from the existing one.
