Groundhog radish

I decided to try a small plot of groundhog radishes. I live in south west Ohio. I have not been able to get into the field due to wet conditions. I looked at the forecast and night temps in the 30s but above freezing with 50s during the day for the next 7 days. Do you think it is to late to plant the radishes or will there still be time to get the benefit to the soil? Thanks for the advice.

Was about to ask what a groundhog radish was, then remembered Google, and figured it out. Best posting there was a cute little girl holding 2 of them that were about as big as she was.

Sooooo- I like radishes with my salad- can you eat them? One or two would last me all winter. . .

If you're talking 'tillage' radishes, they will grow until you get two or three nights of 20 degree weather. They should be planted 6-8 weeks before you hit that point, or around the first part of September. If you get a really mild fall from now until Christmas, they may have enough time to work. The type I planted was a "Daikon" radish.

I planted some Graza radishes in late Aug. Both with the 5100 white planter and doubled back using sugar beet plates and broadcast some in my garden with the little crank scatterbox. Both look really good the broadcast bunch are thicker and are standing up instead of spreading out and have gotten nearly knee high. The tubers are smaller than I thought they would be but at this point I attribute it to this variety of radish being bred for big tops for grazing, but they should be doing an excellent job of scavenging nutrients and are choking out the winter annuals pretty well. I intend to try some other radish varieties next year. I also planted some radishes in 30" rows and doubled back with austrian winter peas. I am trying to experiment with different covers to find workable mixes to use on larger acreages.
