Yeah, I know this is not a movie review site, but I saw one today that I just have to comment on. It’s titled “Bernie”, and it stars Jack Black, Shirley McLain and Matthew McConahey (sp?). It was filmed about 25 miles from my home in the little east Texas town of Carthage, which country music fans among you may be interested to know is the hometown of both Tex Ritter and Jim Reeves. Also of great significance, it’s not far from the Howell Farm.

The movie---a musical comedy about a gruesome murder----was filmed in Carthage because it’s a true story about a real event that occurred in that town six or eight years ago. It’s an absolute hoot and Jack Black is terrific as Bernie, the friendly undertaker who takes up with a rich, hateful old widow and finally murders her and stuffs her body in the freezer. No matter that I’ve given away the plot---the plot is not the charm of this movie. Maybe the richest part is the interviews with the townspeople throughout the film---very authentic east Texas. I highly recommend it.

We have lots of movies filmed here because of diverse natural features and settings, but mostly because of tax breaks. Jack Black filmed another film, “Day One”, a couple of miles from my house. Denzel ington shot some scenes of “The Great Debaters” near my old home place and also close to James and Nancy’s place. Most of the movies made here are fairly forgetable, but we’ve had lots of big stars here---Costner, Bullock, Keaton, Douglas, Cutcher and Demi, Brolin, Jackson, etc. They like that they can get out and about here and not be hassled.

I just watched the "Green Mile" for the first time last week. I highly recommend that movie. Anyway there were about 3 old steel wheel tractors in that movie.

The Green Mile is one of my favorites.

Unfortunately, Michael Clarke Duncan, who played John Coffey, died a few months ago from a heart attack. He was 54.
