View from the volcano

Well actually it isn't a real volcano, but you gotta make do with what you got sometimes:). I was out today and since I was going by here thought maybe I should get some pictures. There used to be a town of Ionia at the bottom of the bluffs here, but floods from the Missouri and a disease outbreak about 100 years ago ended that.

So where exactly is this? From the 'Empire Builder' Amtrak train, you will see a long line of volcanoes? some of these? on the flats just east of the rockies. When I drove west I was looking for them, but they must be west of rt 15, cause when I turned for the border, Great Falls? still none. Seemed to be a straight line of them from the tracks south to the horizon.
I can picture Sacagawea trying to cook supper on the rocks of this thing, like when people live near real 'thermal activity'.
I bet if you looked at the gravestones, they might all be '1918' influenza... hey thanks for sharing these!

Just North of Newcastle NE. About halfway between Sioux City IA and Yankton SD on the Missouri River. It is the only part of the Missouri river not channeled or dammed up. The channeling begins about 10 miles downstream of this spot and the lowest dam is in Yankton about 45 miles upriver. In the one photo if you look hard you can see a large strip of sand at the edge of the field with some trees and the river behind it. This is one spot where the river found a new channel in the flooding last year. In the old days that meant that you either got more ground or lost some. nowadays that is different.

Ok thank you i live by the river close to Yankton. guess I will take a tour of the area someday. A good excuse to stop and have a Bobs burger.

LOL thats funny you should mention that since I only live about 2 miles North of Bobs. I don't know if you are aware of it but there is a shortcut gravel road from Newcastle to Bobs that will cut about 15 miles off your drive instead of taking highway.

except for the corners :). About 1 1/2 miles East of Newcastle turn south on 585 ave. follow it until you come to a "T" in the road, turn left(East) go about 1/4 mile and the road turns south again and take the first left(East) over the bridge and into town.

ok I wrote it down. Who has the big fancy horse barn on the hiway? Wonder if a stall is cheap enough rent for me to live in it. :}
