Steeing box lube ???

Been tearing down a Cockshutt 30 Cleaning and prepping for paint. Had the steering box out this morning and cleaned it inside and out. Had been leaking in past by looks a the crud that had built up under it but didn't leak this morning with gas in it to clean it out. Started thinking that maybe I could get away without changing seals on shafts if I filled it with a good greaze rather than gear oil. Opinions?? Thanks Rocko.

The concensus anymore seems to be to use John Deere corn head grease in them. Grease, but flows fairly well I guess.

Although not a Cockshutt (but I do have 5 of those now).. I just re-sealed the steering box on my 33 Massey Harris.. Put gear oil in it, and all was fine..

Sprayed paint and a couple days later.. Puddle of oil on the floor.

I pumped the JD corn head grease into mine after that. Friend of mine is a parts guy at the CIH dealer, sounds like they too sell a similar product now.

That's what I would recommend.

I have been using JD corn head grease in mine for years with no problems, and no leaks. It is fluid enough to be self leveling so the worm and sector stay lubed.

While I am a CIH person, I do like the John Deere corn head grease better for steering gear boxes. It levels out better and gears look like they have a better coating on them if you take the cap off. Nobody will see the green color of it on a red tractor anyway.

I just been using moly gun grease in my old Masseys for the last 30 years, Flex hose from the fill plug down through the frame with a grease fitting in the end, couple pumps when I grease the front end.
