In the 80's my dad went to the "old country" (Slovakia) to visit relatives. He brought back photos of wood piles stacked like mushrooms. With the tops arranged to shed water. Even had "eaves" on the edges. I will look for the photos. I've often wondered how they did it.

There is an old story about a couple of retired gents that had kind of an informal competition each year to see who built the best looking woodpile. One year they decided to make it official, the local judge agreed to pick the winner, and a few people made some bets on it. Both men hung tarps over there woodsheds to keep anyone from seeing their progress.

After the judging, the loser told the judge, "I don't understand how he won. I cut all my sticks in a miter box, and laid the piles up with a level and plumb line.

The judge said, "Ayup, but he sanded and varnished his."
