New Computer, Here We Go!

Decided it was time to replace the 10 year old Win XP, & the outdated desktop which is probably doomed for failure pretty soon. So I went out & had a custom built (nearly top of the line) full tower desktop with Windows 8 Pro. Also going from 32 bit - 64 bit. Have not plugged it in yet. Decided to throw the switch around midnight start of Christmas since it was 5 days late in completion, & it will just become a personal present to myself! Might not be on this website for a few days if problems take shape. With a computer... You just never know!

Everytime microsoftinthehead comes up with another version of windows it worse then the one before. Windows 7 is so bad I bet you have a lot of fun with Windows 8.

Congrats on the new 'puter. I have often dreamed and sometimes priced one out but have yet to pull the trigger. I am currently refurbing a 2009 unit with a big vid card and some memory. Glad you were able to get one together!

Just started using this HP laptop 64 bit with a 17 inch screen and has Windows 8 last week. Drove me nuts trying to get to the control panel. Still does some times. I have only played on it so far setting up all the different sites I like to visit. My step Son sent me a Logitech wireless trackball M570 which is the best thing since sliced bread. Supposed to be a work computer that I can use out in the factory. Might take me a year or so to have it here at home learning how it works. :)^D

Congratulations. Let us know how Windows 8 works for you. My seven-year-old HP desktop with XP is in the computer nursing home waiting to die from bulging capacitors so a new Nexlink desktop is ordered along with an Acer 22" screen and Logitec keyboard. The combo will be here in ten days or so. It'll be loaded with Windows 7. The computer shop was too leery of 8. He said to wait a year till the bugs are out. Gotta go by his recommendations cause I don't know squat about it. I do tractors, he does computers! I hooked my keyboard, mouse and monitor to Marilyn's laptop so that I could keep up with you guys. My big fingers don't do as well on that laptop keyboard and my old eyes don't like the smaller screen. Jim

My wife just pulled the Christmas trigger on this in-home Sirus radio that feeds off the old wireless 'puter router and satellite. Hope the 'puter doesn't mind. Like it so far.

Windows XP worked pretty good. My first introduction to computers was with XP. Next upgrade took me to Windows Vista. There was a bit of a learning curve involved, but after I learned that most of the Vista features could be customized to behave more like the old XP, I got along just fine, and I am still using Vista. No experience with Windows 7 or 8, but judging from the reviews I have read about Windows 8, NO one likes it, and MOST who have it wish they didn't. If I am forced to buy a new computer, I will request a custom build using the old XP.

My gift is a monitor I can see from across the room. Went to Walmart and bought a 32" VIZIO flat screen TV and another Gizmo that goes between the computer and the tv. Use it to watch Netflix and just normal surfing the net. We don't have cable or any other type of regular TV. Haven't had it in over 20 yrs.

Not sure you can get XP, no longer sercived?

7 is pretty good, stable. Like XP, I suspect 7 will be around a
few extra years until Microsoft gets a better next version.

8 appears well suited for tablets and phones, but does not fit
on a desktop with a mouse. Those who say they like it appear
to be the ones able to get around all the 'features' of8 and are
using it like 7.......

If a computer upgrade is needed in the next few months, I'd be
looking real soon for a leftover 7 system right now.....

Windows 8 X 64 is great but most of your old program and maybe your printer and monitor won't work with it. Good luck I'm stll working on mine.

Consumer Reports says no need to buy Win8, just keep your Win7 and even if you are using XP, keep on using it & save money & headaches.

Took me days to get anywhere close to operating Windows 8 but then I am 70= years old and not really computer savy . When you get use to it you will like it,but takes things to a whole different level.

Scotty Deere, please tell us what motherboard, processor, video card, memory, power supply and all that good stuff you used in your new build. Are you using th new 8 core 3.5G AMD or the I7 Intell processor and the Gigabyte, Intel, ASUS or Elite Motherboard? Inquiring minds want to know. What other high zoot, bees knees stuff does it have. Does it have a touch screen and wireless keyboard? Thanks.

I would never update the OS on an older computer if it's running good on Vista or XP. Having said that, my laptop came with Win 7 and it's running just fine. Will not upgrade it to Win 8.

A year ago when my old laptop's motherboard crashed, I went out and purchased a new Dell laptop with the Win 7 OS, but had to upgrade from the "Home" Edition to the "Pro" Edition in order to get the "Virtual XP" as all of my programs are in either XP or Win 98 SE . So far everything's working great. Will NOT upgrade to Win 8 .

Dave,

What was the gizmo called that let you use an HDTV as a computer monitor. That sounds like a great idea! I tried searching Walmart.com and Amazon, com but I could not narrow down the search because I don't know what to look for.

Thanks!

Merry Christmas.

I still get regular patches and updates for XP Pro with the Windows Update program, so I guess XP Pro is still supported.

I just got a new computer with windows 8 to. Wish I had taken it back and got windows 7. Things you could do in one step in windows XP now take 3 or 4. I can't open any attachments on yahoo mail, saving pictures is a royal pain, and everything can be done 4 or 5 ways, as if one wasn't complicated enough. This was designed by a computer brainiac who has lost all touch with reality.

Well I just looked behind the tv and it seems to be just a heavy wire with large ends on it connecting the two. When I bought it I just asked the younger people if it was possible to do that and they said yes. I picked the TV and they gave me the rest I needed and tried to explain how to accomplish what I wanted to do. It can't be too complicated because I was able to do it without calling them again for instructions.

(quoted from post at 06:07:13 12/25/12) My advice to anyone purchasing a new computer is get Windows 7. You will not be happy with Windows 8.

And if you can get Windows Vista, you will be even more happy.
