Just went out to start it. Reached in like I always do and turned the key to start.
Key stuck in the start position and didn't spring back to run.
Switched it back by hand then tried a couple of times to start it again.
Engine turns over fine but no fire.
It always fires instantly.
What to do?

sounds like the ignition switch went bad, the electric part, not the key part, not sure on the new trucks but mine has a rod which goes from the key switch down to the electric part on teh lower steering column if this is out of adjustment or gone bad or the rod gets bent you will not energize the whole start system, that is the engine may roll over but its not providing electrical power to it in the cranking position , might look at that being as the key stuck, maybe somebody else will have another idea

Not sure about an '06, but older GM vehicles with Passkey systems will behave this way when there's a problem with the ignition switch. The vehicle will probably start if you give it a snort of starting fluid, but will quit when the ether runs out.

My 05 done the same thing a while back. You have to remove the upper and lower covers on the steering column between the steering wheel and dash cluster. Once you have those covers off, you'll see the switch is very easy to get too. The local carquest had the switch in stock, it was fairly cheap.

How do you get the covers off?
I see 3 holes underneath but am too blind to see what kind of a screw driver or allen wrench it takes.

Two of the holes will have a torx bit screw about 1.5 inches up inside them holes. I don't recall the size but I want to say it was a 12 or 15.

We had a chevy bus at work did that. We pulled in the shop two hours later went to back it out. It would crank but not start. It thru a security/thef code which prevented it from starting. Is your fuel pump running when you first turn the key on? If not use a mallet and tap on the bottom of the tank and see if that helps. Just a thought from previous experience.

Amen to Eric, been there, done that After I spent 500 bucks on fuel pump, plugs and wires, ECM., coil etc. Ign. switch will turn starter over, but supply no power to the rest. '95 4.3 WT

Thanks John,
I'm perfectly willing to tear into a tractor - engines, trannys, hydraulics, whatever.
But if the truth be known I haven't so much as changed the oil in one of my pickups in 16 years.
I made the arrangements today. A buddy is going to help me tow it to the dealer tomorrow afternoon.
It goes into their shop at 7 AM Monday.
Sad but true.

First thing you need to do is find out if there are any codes in the ECM. Yes ignition switches are not an uncommon failure, but you really should find out first. Last one I had it was actually the ignition 1 relay in the underhood fuse box.
