Great pics Larry, thanks for posting,, but!! This has nothing to do with tractors, so someone might get it poofed!!! Lol, I don't care I like your pics, you won't see me crying about ot posts! Thanks again.

The first shots looks like a rather dreary morning, but when the clouds broke up and the sun came out, it sure made a difference! Enjoyed the pix, thanks Larry.

How thick was the ice? Opaque ice like that always makes me nervous, up here there are spots that stay thin even on the coldest of winters. Went ice-fishing this november, ice was crystal clear and about 38" thick, but still had a couple open spots.

Thanks for the pics Larry. It gets me anxious to dig out the old folding ice shack and dust it off. I'm a gold blooded old fool so I like to fish surrounded by heat. Jim

I'm a southern boy, so I don't know much about iced-over lakes, but danged if I could bring myself to drill a hole right where I'm standing on one.

Being from SE AZ I had never walked on a frozen lake until I spent a winter working in Milwaukee on the North Shore tunnel project. We went for a ride on a nice day and came to a lake with vehicles parked all over it with people fishing through the ice. My wife and I went for a walk on the ice and it kinda freaked me out!! The ice was creaking and groaning ,making all kinds of weird noises. I had to get off the ice of pretty quickly. I didn't like that at all.

Those pictures brought back a lot of memories. My dad loved to fish year around. We would go over to Keyhole lake in Crook County Wyoming and ice fish in the winter. I was never that much on fishing in the winter. Last time was probably in 1958.

larry@stines,

Fresh fish looks great. I can almost taste them.
But I prefer my lakes thawed. Went onto a frozen lake once when cross country skiing... never again. Those cracking sounds creeped me out totally.

The pic with the blue sky and vibrant yellow of the fish almost looks like a painting. That one looks like a photo contest winner to me.

No way I'm going out on ice.Years ago the local resvoir froze over and some guy from Northern Europe was ice saking on it and they had a big article on him in a Sunday paper he explained how he could tell the thickenss if the ice and how strong it was etc etc.The following Tuesday he went thru the ice and drowned, apparently he didn't know when you dam up a pretty good size river the river will still have a channel thru the lake.

Yesterday we drove 5 miles out on upper Red Lake, the resorts check the ice and plow roads so it's pretty safe, 23" inches of ice. Lots of pickup trucks with huge (tandem axle) portable fish housed behind them. We kept 4 Walleyes, the fishing reports are better than that. (the you should of been here yesterday story!)

No way I'm going out on ice. My thoughts exactly. And even off the ice I do not like those freezing temps, have too many that have to be out in to go out and not something that has to be done.

Unless I knew there was NO WATER under that ice and the ground under it would I go on the ice even if it was 4 foot thick and we do not get frost depth neer that.
