I see it is foggy as heck outside this morning. I can only see about 100 yards and my house is about 200 yards off the road.

The school bus just went by to pick up my grandkids. I could not see the bus at all but could see the clear flashing becon on the back of the bus plain as day.

Why don't all cars have that beacon to turn on in foggy weather?

Just wondering.

Gary

Gary,
Some cars have rear fog lights, red lights that are brighter than the brake lights, they are required by law on all cars sold in Europe, not sure why we don"t have them yet, but like you say, we need something.

I have noticed GM trucks have daytime running lights and others do not just wondering. People with fog lights just leave them on all the time, and they are useless with the low beams anyway. Most people in the U.S. are serious about saftey when they go in a lawyers office, the rest of the time "who needs it". i.e. Seat belt and ROPS on tractors.

Half of the GM trucks you see on the road with their running lights on, only one light is burning. They ought to go to led. The government gave them enough money to make upgrades like that.

Fog lights ARE NOT USELESS with the low beams anyway, That is a big falsehood. They are absoutly usefull at night with both low and high beams and if set right make it so you can see the road closer than the normal low beam and also show the shoulder of the road that you cannot see without them. I run a rual paper delievery route 1 night a week and 5 days a week that would end in the dark in the winter and they would make the difference in being able to tell where the paper boxes were. I did that for over 15+ years so I have mant a mile under my belt in all kinds of weather, clear day or night, fog at any time, rain at any time and snow our ice. So I know they help. My van right now I have the fog lights set up to come on whenever the parking lights come on and they are on 100% of the time the lights are on, the driving lights are hooked to the high beam and are automatic to come on with high beam and off whem the high beam is off.

Big problem with those daytime running lights is when it is raining or fog and you need lights on the back they do not come on, only the headlights that are not needed as that oncomming vehical you can easly see but not the rear end of the one in front of you.

while i agree some fog lights do seem to help with light placement for the driver of the vehicle with them on, far to many drivers use them when they aren't needed (not fog conditions) and seems to think its cool to drive with them on, and many seem to be poorly aimed, trucks seem worse than cars, as the light goes up into the oncoming drivers eyes not down onto the road...
If you want extra light fit driving lights not fog lights, there is a difference

Who'd turn it on? Three quarters of the morons who go past here in foggy days don't even have their lights on.

who would turn them off?
how can you tell what kind of pickup truck is coming toward you? chevrolet, only one day time running lamb burning.

Fog lights should only be used in fog, I see idiots every night in the dark with fog lights on, it is blinding to on coming drivers, now when I come up on a idiot with fog lights on, or someone that's to stupid to switch from
High beam to low beam, I pull the lever back to put on the high and low beam, the lights get real bright while holding it back! 3/4s of them with highs on still don't know enought to switch to lows.

A-Ha...SO YOU are one of those Idiots who never turn your darned FOG lights OFF when meeting or Following another vehicle..

I believe turning them OFF is A LAW AND a Common courtesy..

Do YOU leave the Shopping Cart in the grocery parking lot too..??? (NOT in the Coral)..
Seems most Lazy-butted "Americans" do...

Ron..

Their CEO's NEEDED that money for there Retirement "Packages"...

Funny how FORD didn't need the bailout and is doing just as well....

They will be arguing over the legality of the "Bailout" for many Years (5th Amendment violations.
What else is new..??
Does NOT matter is something is "Legal", as long as it becomes Law (and external_link got his way again)..
Sure IS showing More and More Arrogance and disdain for "American Ideals", now..
"Laws"..?? He don't need to respect no stink'in Laws...(Remember the Louisiana Purchase??)

Ron..
Ron..

Would be GREAT if the Police enforced those laws (to the LETTER)..!!

When I was ready for my License, there was a movement to add one single small "Driving Light" in the center of the grill..about 20 candle power..and it became a long battle to get even that approved, as it was a "Forward-Facing Light" that would be ON when meeting traffic..

NOW, idiots are free to BLIND people and THEY don't even have any CLUE they are..or just don't give a fat rat's ar^^...
Had a guy pull up behind me at an intersection with his Brights and Driving (Fog?) Lights on..completely had me Blind..
I sat there..just really ready to take a tire-iron to his bright lights...
As far as I'm concerned, Blinding another driver should be considered ROAD-RAGE....

Ron..

I have a nephew that's real proud of his way too bright driving lights. I told him I hoped he turned them off when there was oncoming traffic or when someone was in front of him. He said he didn't. I told him he better be prepared for someone to smash his lights and kick his ***.

Daytime running lights have been standard in Canada since the 1990s. The parts for ALL common vehicles already exist. In fact when you import a US bought vehicle into Canada, you are required to fit it with daytime running lights if the same model was equipped with them in Canada.
I think it's a lot safer. My '98 Chevy truck has 'em and I haven't replaced a headlight bulb in over 10 years!

Man >>>> After reading the post guess we just have a bunch of jerks here in Tennessee. Just about all the folks running Fords just put the light control in auto pulled out. Which means you lights are going to come on automatic and when your lights are on low beam the fog lights will be on. Pretty well the norm and as far as I know does not break any state law. I don,t see the fog lights being a problem meeting other vehicles but guess I am missing something.
