My sons have been in BB gun shooting and archery and they wanting to move up to small bore rifle and pistol shooting. What do people use for the pistol competition (rifle is covered)?

I was about to pull the trigger on a like new (maybe had 10 rounds through it) Ruger MK III Target with a bull barrel and wood grips (anyone that owns one will know why thats important) for $325 but handled a Berretta Neos Target last night (new) for $265.

Anyone have real world experience in this?

My wife has one she loves it I hate it she out shoots me. it is a very good shooting pistol. she has the competition model with the 6.5 inch barrel.

Buy the best older Ruger you can find. Standard, MK1, MK2...

The old "Standard" models were fantastic shooters, especially for the money. Any Ruger 22 will outshoot 99% of aspiring shooters. They are incredibly durable, and forgiving of neglect.

IMHO, the MK3 and 22/45 aren't the quality of the older models.

I have an older standard MkII, the sights are nothing I would use for target shooting. That's why I made the comment about the wood grips - the plastic ones melt when using certain gun cleaners.

I really like my stainless Ruger Mk2 target bull barrel. It shoots way better than I can. I also have a Ruger stainless single six. It shoots equally as well just not as fast.

You won't go wrong with the Ruger. They have the ability to shoot far better than I can hold them, and I know of several that have had tens of thousands of rounds fired through them with nothing more than an occasional good cleaning.

I can still remember the day Dad got ready to butcher a steer, and I wanted to move up from a BB gun to a 22 cal. Thinking not a big move. Well when Dad KILLED the steer with one shot I knew what a gun was all about. Best training you can give.

I have an older stainless Ruger MKII ? with around a 5" bull barrel. I can outshoot many people who are using a rifle !
Only problem I had was failure to extract after a decent amount of shooting. The stamped steel extractor had rounded off edge. So I made my own and it is now trouble free.

Does the chapter have a standard on the equipment? Our national archery chapter uses the Mathews Genesis bow.

If you ever want to use an optical sight on it, make sure you buy a new enough one that is already tapped for the mounts. I'm sure you could tap an older one too.

They are all great shooters.

No standard, to compete at state (Kansas) the bows have to pass a safety inspection and the arrows have to be rated to for the "pull" on the bow.

What state you in?
Michigan doesn"t do pistol. Only air rifle, .22, muzzle, shotgun, archery.

Think, however that is a very good choice, but probably should check with his shooting sports leader.

I have a Ruger Mk 2 Target 5.5" bull stainless. Very happy with it and it's much better than I am. Never had problems as long as I used factory magazines.

i got my wife thee Neos for Valentine"s Day and she has put well over 1500 rounds through it since then with zero problems. Extremely accurate, Much easier gun to take down and clean than the Ruger- you just have to get used to it"s "ray gun" looks.

Check with your 4-H extension office - Here (and I'm sure there) a shooting sports leader is required to have training and a up-to-date certificate to be a shooting sports leader. Training is (I'm told) equivalent to NRA or better. Have been told that NRA accepts 4-H training, just add ca$h, and application and they will issue NRA credentials. Each discipline is taught separately, and eats up most of a weekend. I have rifle, and air rifle, shotgun, and muzzle loader endorsements. Son has archery, and lacks shotgun, so between us we cover the waterfront. Without that training, there is no 4-H backing, and insurance coverage, etc. If anything happens, you're on your own.

That Ruger is a nearly $600 pistol new. I came close to buying one earlier this week, but bought a Browning 1911 .22 instead. I already have a Ruger MKIII with 6-inch standard barrel. Sweet shooter. I sure the Beretta is a fine gun, but I can't get past the looks.

love the rugers been trying to get a mark lll since december and nobody has one. Another good gun to look at is the brownig buckmark.

I bought a Ruger MkIII 22/45 bull barrel. It's the only 22 pistol I've ever seen that comes close to matching my FILs High Standard Supermatic. They make me look like a shooting whiz! It's really something to find you can actually chew the center out of a bullseye target...on a good day anyway! They both out shoot my K22 and M48 K frame 22 Mag.
