New old battery, no acid.

I've got an old group 48 battery sitting in my shop that never had acid put in. Would it still be good to use? I'm thinking it's been there for 20 years still has a plastic wrapper on it.

I just looked up group 48 online and they're pretty pricey batteries.

It should be fine once you add electrolyte.

A friend of mine had a dry charged battery in his shop for over 25 years before adding electrolyte a couple of years ago. It worked fine.

I'm sure it will work fine, but I would have to question its longevity once put in use. Not sure if the insulators between the plates are much good after that long... Just my thoughts.

Should be OK if the cap seals are still in plsce.

Do the special initial charge procedure needed to "wake up" a dry charged battery. Takes about 24 hrs, but will increase the performance and life of the battery.

google dry charge battery to find the filling charging lnfo.

When I was in the Army. I had batteries come in that had been on the shelf for years. Put in the acid. Let them slow charge for a couple of days. Never had a problem.

Thanks for the info.

The big issue I have is I don't have anything that uses a 48. Maybe I could see if someone wanted to trade for a battery I could use.

Or I could retrofit, looks like they're pretty beefy batteries.

Most parts houses carry the acid just fill it to the proper level
giv it a 15 minute charge and instal in vehicle or charge longer
if not put directly into a vehicle.
There should be no problem with unless it as been dropped or
hit hard. Most all batteries were of this type when I had my station back in the 60s
