There comes a time when one must buy a newer truck, but what should I ask for my 2004 serra 1500 auto 4x4. It has 190K mikes and still runs good. No dents, some scratches and paint is fading. The trany was new at 100K miles. It has been run on only synthetic and hasn't been beat to hell. The KBB stuff is crap. They say $7500, but I think $4000 is a good number. Everywhere I look around here they want $7K to $10K. Surely people aren't paying those kinds of prices for high mileage pickups. Are they?

Well, this is an Ontario report, but when I go on Kijiji and look for trucks like that ,they do range from 4000 to 7500..here's how I see used trucks because I have bought several of them...I don't care if they need brakes,rotors,calipers..thats all stuff you can get cheap and do in your shop if you are the least bit mechanical, same with exhaust, tires etc...what will turn me away from a truck is rust and body damage,I can do mechanical work,I don't do body work(anymore). If your truck has a good body,no rust,no bubbles around the fenders, cab corners or sills, then I would look at it...don't worry about faded paint, body shop can buff up paint to look like new,put a sheen on like a new truck.,I don't think $4000 is quite enough,if you want to sell it mechanically certified then $7000 doesn't seem out of line...I guess it all depends what part of the country you are in,the demand for used trucks and the market..usually during tough times the used market is good and tends to rise pricewise. ASk high and be willing to negotiate .IMHO..

Don't know about pickups, but was looking for a minivan on dealer used lot. Chrysler van 2003, 201000 miles,$5900. Had several in that range. Said used vans are hard to find. I don't know why, everybodys got one.

I would say start out at more than $4000. Say $5500
If it's got a good body, then it's worth more yet.
Ext cab and crew cab are worth even more.

Yes.. "good" used trucks are bringing a hefty price here in SE Lower Michigan anyhow.

Dad has been looking at 2007-2009's, 3/4 ton, std or ext cab, 4x4.. The rest is just details as far as he's concerned.. 100-200k miles the average seems to be 15-20k asking price.. and the local dealers seem to move em faster than he can ask about em..

I know it's a little newer than you're asking about, but, it's what I've been hearing about.. Oh, and dad has a 2004 1/2 ton, std cab, longbox, 4x4, 5.3 v8 "work truck", has about 130k miles and all said is really clean except for a tear in the drivers seat (told him to spend some money and the billfold will quit rubbing through LOL) and I believe he said one dealer offered 6500 in trade (but, sometimes dad's talk gets a little BIG, iff'n ya get what I'm sayin)

I would look on craigslist and see what others are asking for comparable trucks. That, in my mind is the best way to price anything; don"t fool with dealers : check" by owner only" ads.

Yes they are paying those prices, sold a similar 1 with 194340 miles on it yesterday for $9995.00 We have several others in the same price range.

Nice ones even at your mileage fetch KBB retail PLUS 2K around here...
A customer of mine just brought a 03 K1500 for $8500,,, average used truck it needed a brake job ($700) and exhaust from the cat back ($250)... I thought it was to much myself...

A customer crashed his 2000 Z71 with 100K on it about 3 years ago,,, His insurance totaled it they paid him $10500 we thought he did good,,, he has not been able to find a comparable replacement with his $10500... In Hind-site he should have took the 10/5 and repaired it...

Prices are holding pretty good. If it is clean, the higher mileage is the only thing that migh bring the price down some. Start high on your price, you can always come down later.
