Hi guys!
Its that time of the year. Shop projects.

This is a pic of our 4430 when I bought it three years ago. Paid $8500 and drove it home from the dealer.

Its come a long way. Tires, cab interior, fixed the a/c. Lots of elbow grease and a little paint but it does look better these days. It had less than 7000 one owner hours when we bought it. We needed a extra tractor and it has worked out well and more than earned its keep.

I bought this F640 plow at a consignment auction a couple years ago. We are planning to use it behind the 830 this spring. It has new tires, wheel bearings, shins, shares, cover boards, modlboards, rolling coulters and the coulters have new bearings. Should be good as new now.

The 4440 is in the shop. Its going to get new tires this week and obviously needs a good pressure washing after last weeks little incident.

For those who may have missed one of my better moves!

This is laying in the shop waiting to be put to work. Should be safer than riding in the loader bucket and maybe a bit handier as well.

Found this magnet at wally mart one night and couldnt resist. Since I put it on here they have been winning, not pretty, but winning so...... GO ILLINI!

Wrigley is still banished to being co pilot. He dearly loves to ride around in the back of the gator. We are both looking forward to spring!

We havent been on any big winter shop projects. Mostly doing cow chores and just servicing things. Sounds like snow coming again this week. Oh well. Hope everyone else has been have as much fun as we have. Life is just better when its fun!!!

Wrigley appears to be wintering well.

In the picture of the stuck tractor, He likely is thinking, "another fine mess you got us into, Ollie!"

Thanks for posting the pictures and the price on the 4430. Retired farm neighbor has a rough runnning 4240 with the Soundgard cab that might be sold. Gives me an idea what to offer.

First time some limb is just out of reach with that triming saw you WILL BE BACK IN THE LOADER BUCKET again! Trust me on this! LOL. Armand

I have one of those saws too. I thought I wouldnt be in a loader bucket anymore. I am still in a bucket, but now instead of getting branches that are 12 ft high I can get branches that are 25' high....

Great pictures, Bill. Amazing the difference that tires made on your 4430, looks like a different tractor. Does the pole extend on the saw? I have one but the pole is fixed on mine, the head is detachable and a weeder head can be put on. It's handy, but a longer saw pole would be nice.

It looks like a first class operation. I'm always impressed with your pictures. Even though you let the dog drive the tractor and blame him for sticking it in the mud. Maybe it won't happen again now that your putting new tires on th it.

@ billonthefarm:

Really nice place you have there, thanks for the pictures.

In an earlier post ("Not a Farmer - Plows") I stated that I'm not a Farmer, I'm a Miner and I'm trying to understand the various parts of a plow & what their functions are - and other members of this forum helped me out quite a bit. But now after seeing your photo of that F640 plow, I have another question. What is that "new" curved, notched plate above the mouldboard and what is it's function?

Thanking you in advance for your response.

Cover boards, Doc. They throw the top edge over so it covers the trash.

That curved item is called a cover board(may have a fancy proper name: not sure). It's function is to throw "clean dirt"(dirt with no trash) on top of the trash so you bury all the trash, Problem is plowing with some trash helps to keep the dirt from blowing and provides a place for surface water to wick into the ground. Blowing dirt is one of the raesons few farmers plow now. Hope this helps. Armand

A friend brought a roll-over plow brand new in Ashkum, Il. years ago. He had a lot of triangle shaped fields and it lessened the amount of time he spentturnig on the headlands.I believe the local dealer had the new plow shipped in from Ka. or Nb. Armand

Thank you Armand and J. Wondergem for answering my
question.

I was raised in the city - Los Angeles area - and
never exposed to the farming way of life, even
though we had a "family farm" back in Virginia.
Sorry to say, but I've never successfully grown
anything except OLDER.

Dr. Walt: Forgot to mention coverboards have been used since at least sometime in the early '60's. Also disc coultors, instead of straight coultors, if set right would also cover trash. Armand
