I got sickle sections from tractor supply was wondering if any one uses them. I didn't put them on yet. They don't seem to have serrated up the face of the bevel. Was wondering if they would be worth puttin on or returning and getting others?

I've never bought those from TSC but if you have suspicion already I would return them and get something you're sure of. Just my 2 cents worth.

Bottom serated? I've been using them with good results for several saesons. If I could just get rid of the ground moles and their mole hills (with stones in them).... They'd last a lot longer. Takes guards out with anoying regularity.

Well, I can partially answer your question. I believe TSC has changed their sickle vendor within the past year.

I have used some of TSC brand (that are shinney in color like chrome almost) top serrated sections on my 1120 and they seem fine.

I have also noticed that newer packages TSC sections are no longer shinney but simply a dull metel color and the package is slightly different too. This is what leads me to believe their vendor has changed. I have yet to try any of these dull in colr ones, but the quality does indeed look inferior at a quick glance.

Top serrated can be sharpened as well as smooth sections (used for grass) Top serrated (for alfalfa and stemmy crops)are self sharpening. Sickle sections are disposable items made to wear out. Ask anybody that mows a lot of hay. It's an every day job to service sickles.

If your guards have smooth edges then you need serrated sections. Smoothe sections only for the old JD serated guards with serrated ledger plates.

Those smooth sections are to be used with old style guards with serrated ledger plates. Never use smooth sections on smooth guards.
I don't know the rules on using upper serrated, or lower serrated on smooth guards. Do you?

Hardness and toughness are the key to long life. Put a sharp file to the rear edge of one to test it against an old one. If hard, it should be a good wear resistant section. If they snap off in use, they are too brittle. Jim
