Barn Siding

For my 32x 50 barn that I use to store my AC tractors, It is wood siding and I don't want to paint it. What do you suggest, vinyl, aluminum, steel and web sites to look at?

If it was mine and I was an avid AC fan, I might think about looking at steel siding and trim to match the tractor color scheme. I don't know where Morton Buildings gets their siding but it is high quality material. I put up a Morton Building over 20 years ago and it looks like the day they finished construction.

I would go with the conventional steel siding that comes in many different colors. The bottom 4ft I would make a different color. This also helps if you hit the side of the shed mowing or with a tractor implement etc it's easier to replace the bottom 4ft section than the whole piece on the side of the building. Cheaper too!!

What I found out with vinyl siding is if you need to replace a piece of it in 5-10 years you can't find any to match and have to live with the damaged piece on the building or replace the whole side of the building.

Just my 2 cents from experience.

I agree, use steel. Great color selection and easy to put up.

My husband did our old farm buidings in steel siding. This converted granary-to-garage was done about 5 years ago. (This photo looks too red for some reason - they are actually more rust-red colored). He did pay a higher price to get the steel from a local lumber yard - but it was thicker steel than one could get at Menards or a farm store.

On the other hand, we have seen many homes and garages sided with vinyl that is now warped and rippled. Also his parents sided in vinyl and my father-in-law put a rock through the siding. We are just not impressed with vinyl.

No mater what you chose to cover your existing wooden wall be sure to apply a breathable barier under the vinyl or steel, Tyvek or similar. Vinyl you can apply directly. I would fur and leave an air gap with steel in this situation, because steel will cause moisture to condense and trap moisture between the surfaces. Companies also offer "rain screens" which are applied between framing walls when wood claps, or shakes are used.
Personally, I would use double 5 vinyl, as it is much easier for a lay person to use, and trim, and soffit material can be adapted without metal breks, etc. I am a retired builder.BTDT, and have all the tools for both siding materials.

Depends on the crew you get from any big co. My barn is a Morton and although it's durable and looks good, I don't think anybody that worked on it owned a level. Everything is out of plumb and on two of the gutters, I had to make new holes for downspouts at the other end because water would fill the gutter and run over before it would run to the downspout they put in. I personnalyu will nenver recomend them.

the problem with vinyl is they change the profile in a few years.it does fade but you can color match and paint the new piece.it works pretty good.
