Livelihood Still Evident

My Uncle has been gone for almost 20 years. He always had a set of mules up until he retired in the mid 1970's. He raised some grain but mostly vegetables, corn, greenbeans, horseradish, he milked one cow twice a day, made hay, and had a few hogs and beef cattle. I got a chance to take some (60) pictures inside his barn. I will post them in sets of 10. Hope you enjoy.

Some nice pictures that show my uncle's livelihood is still evident today from a time passed.

That barn is frozen in time. Still have one circuit in the farmhouse that is knob and tube wiring.

John,

I'm not sure what your uncle used the big rake-like tool for, but I remember seeing something like that in a Mother Earth News magazine about 30 years ago. The article had to do with cutting hay with a scythe, and then using a huge rake like that to rake the hay into piles for subsequent transport to the barn.

It would take a much better man than I am to embark on such an endeavor.

Picture #10, that looks like the frame for an old Singer treadle sewing machine that the motor is mounted on.

Just imagine if that barn could talk!! The pain, suffering, smiles and happiness...........Pretty tough undertaking in this day and age to build a barn like that..........imagine what it was like when that was built. Keep the pictures rolling!

Great pictures-thanks for posting. The barn is still in good shape long after your uncle retired. What is the small building built into the hill in the first picture- potato storage or an old garage?
