Plastic ain't better

A couple of weeks ago I posted about a waitress that couldn't give correct change when I paid with cash. I believe that it was "English" who responded that plastic was the way to pay. Plastic was the future. Well local grocery store chain got hacked and my debit card has been compromised. I have to go to the bank Monday morning to see how bad I got hit and what needs to be done to straighten things out, and if I can get my money back. This never happened with cash or checks. So my opinion is, plastic convenient? Yes. Better NO.

Plastic vs cash isnt really the issue here. Its credit vs debit card.

I refuse to have a debit card, if something like you describe happens, the cash is already out of the account and you have to fight to get it back. If you are using a credit card, you just put the charge into dispute and don't pay it. The credit card company backcharges the merchant and it becomes the merchant's problem.

So many folk say its the same, but i'm like you - credit card is safer than a debit card. At one time the safety net of regulations did not protect the consumer as well with debt cards; perhaps that has changed of late.

My banker (the bank president) told me the bank was responsible for all fraudulent charges on my debit card with no limit. They just had to pay for a customers card that was stolen and used in Italy. That is why they have insurance. You should get all your money back no problem. If you don't, it's time for a new bank.

I resisted using a credit card for years, until my local bank started pushing their name brand debit card. I gave in and tried it. It is handy for cardtrol gas pumps and ordering online.
In spite of their assurance that it has the same protection of a credit card, I was not comfortable with that card having access to my main checking account.
I went back in and set up a new account just for the debit card with just enough in it to cover my usual months debit card use (a few hundred $$), with no transfer to the card account without my personal sign off.
I feel this protects my account and the bank, with the limited $$ in the debit card can access.

I've never been able to understand the lure of debit cards- with credit card, they carry you for a month, still no interest if you pay in full, and more protection to boot.

I do get annoyed in grocery lines- the corollary of young folks getting debit cards so they won't overspend is that they find out the account is empty when they're trying to check out at the grocery line. Then a big delay while they go get another card out of the car, or try other cards that also are maxed out, etc. Naturally, they don't have any actual money. Meanwhile I'm standing there with my cash, fuming.

Or the woman that waits til everything is rung up and back in the cart, then goes digging in her purse looking for something to pay with, like 'Oh do I have to pay for this'.

Big,
The local news says the worst part, is that Schnucks new about the problem three weeks ago, but failed to notify anyone.

There"s a reason stores default to debit instead of credit. Guess who pays for the transaction when it"s debit versus credit?

Don't try hiding anything from anyone if you pay with a card either. They like it when you use it because they can amass info on what you buy then sell that info to advertisers. Info is big business today, I pay with cash as much as possible.

Can somebody tell me how this debit system works down there? The way I understand it, you just swipe the card and it either apporves or doesn't. My gut tells me nobody would be that stupid, walk around with a card that hass access to thousands with no fraud protection. Do you have to sign the receipt? Do they compare signatures? Are there PIN #'s? I can understand why someone might dislike debit cards if it's a simple swipe with no protection.

English never responded to that post. USAonly said - "You old farts talk like the "REAL WORLD" is your world--The new real world is when you pay for your meal they swipe their debit card--a lot of the younger generation do not even carry money!!Right or wrong that is what it is coming to."
I tend to agree with him a bit. I don't tend to carry much money. Deposit my cheques and spend the money with debit. That said it's literally impossible to hack a debit card (here) There's a chip(not RFID) in them that is supposedly impossible to duplicate. You have to insert the card into the terminal, and enter your PIN while it verifies that the card is authentic. Credit cards are the same thing, though occasionally it allows you swipe or use paypass.
