Where should I move to in Kansas or Missouri ???

Hi, I know this is not about tractors,I have a 22 acre hobby farm in Wisconsin and getting sick of the winter"s. I am trying to talk the wife into moving south, I figured Kansas or Missouri would be a good place to buy a hobby farm, you have 3 to 4 season"s and I dont want the hot heat like TX. We would like to be just outside of a 10,000 populated town or smaller and in a farming area.It might sound crazy but we are leaving in a week to go looking in those two states to see what it"s like and check out some town"s and ask about some places for sale and land prices, taxes, tornado"s , employment. The wife"s a CNA and I hobby farm, weld, paint tractor"s but spent 19 years at a cheese plant until it closed 2 year"s ago,my son is graduating in May and both my parents that lived just down the road pasted away in the last year. Winter has lasted so long here, I thought it would be a good time to move this summer. The wife has relation in Houston and I know it"s too hot for us that far down. Anyone have any input on some nice area"s would be great...Thank"s

You could find a place with your house in Missouri and barn in Kansas or you would probably want your barn on the North side of the house.

South Central MO in the West Plains area would be nice..Its mostly a cattle area but theres some tillable ground...My wife grew up there and still has lots of family there...Theres lots of fishing and hunting..

Southwestern MO anywhere from Springfield to Neosho would be something to consider..SE Kansas would be OK but taxes are lots higher than MO....

I live in Missouri the Lake of the Ozarks area. Taxes here are cheap and land if you look in a rural area is cheap as in under $1500 per acre. If you get down in the south east area of Missouri you can find places there that are out in the woods and very rural and cheap. Have a friend who picked up 45 acres last fall for $65,000 but it is hill side no farm land but there is a lot of good farm land here but not in the south of the state unless you want to do cattle and hay

You're gonna make me jealous, but yea,West Plains,Mansfield,Mountain Grove,Houston,Salem Mo area. We were there several times looking 12-15 years ago. Super nice place to be,great folks around there.

Don't know anything about the tax situation but if you are going that far don't forget to check out ne Oklahoma. That is one of the most beautiful areas I drive through and if I left Mn. that would be where I would go.

I wouldn't overlook Oklahoma. I think that's where I'd head if I left Nebraska.

I read something recently about Oklahoma being one of the more desireable places to live.

Must have missed that part of Oklahoma on my way to Lawton and back.

Check out the Bolivar/ Stockton Missouri area. There"s a Decent size hospital in Bolivar,(CMH) Population of about 10,000 25 minutes from Springfield 150,000. Close to 2 nice size lakes and still some farm land around.

I 2nd that. My dad was born and raised in Aldrich MO not far from Stockton or Bolivar. I love that whole area up there. Post WWII dad moved to Sprinfield and thats where I have been my entire life. Nice town but growing to fast for me.

I live in SW missouri just south of Joplin. I'm 30 minutes from OK, KS and Ark. I love it here, economy has held up pretty well, close to good colleges and great hospitals. Lots of small communities but you're always close enough to larger towns to get any hard to find item. Land is fair but gets higher the closer you get to arkansas because of walmart head quarters. You can find hilly, flat, wooded or open depending on which direction you go.

Our family moved from northeast Ne 25 years ago, to northeast Ok. Love it here, winter are 2 month shorter and not near as cold.

Eastern Kansas is good but still possible to get the winter prarie storms and winds blowing in from the north and west. Missouri I think is better, but my money would go a little further east to Tennesse. Good state tax structure and decent winters.

The southwest corner of Missouri is nice.I don't live there but do spend time there every fall. The Aurora, Monett, Cassville area are very appealing.I can't take anything away from the Springfield metro though. All close to agriculture, recreation, and medical facilities.Good Luck with your choice.

Don't move to Missouri, it's too crowded......

I posted this in the Classic view and when Sweetfeet said she was having trouble posting in modern view I looked here and it wasn't so I'll try it here'
Check this out. According to this study, you should move to Missouri. Not much difference between Oklahoma and Missouri.

The "amenities" within a short drive are certainly something to think about. As you get older they become more and more important, especially medical services.

I have a senior GP country doctor, who operates an office in a local small town, but he is linked to a big hospital chain in a 20 mile away 25,000 pop. town which is linked to one of the biggest hosp. in Dallas.

Other thing is, having the big box stores within 25 miles and other niceties really helps. But if you don't want to use them, you are away from it and life is good.

The problem with Houston is humidity. I grew up there and moved to N. TX. to get away from it. Worked. Once you get away from the coast the heat is much more tolerable.

A several problems I see with your two choices: You are still going to get a lot of winter, you are in the tornado belt, and you aren't getting away from hot summers. I spend a lot of time watching the weather in other parts of the US and that is where I base my comment.

I'm not suggesting where you go, just that you aren't necessarily going to achieve your aspirations with your two choices.

Young families and older or retired people do worse with a sales tax because everything they have to buy is taxed. The state of Tennessee has a cyclical revenue problem because of their reliance on sales tax. Balancing their state budget is a lot more difficult. I could go on but ... well, you know. I feel the shadow of the poof monster coming.

Missouri has a lot better scenery than Kansas, for sure. Things are generally cheaper on the KC side than the St. Louis side, but I don't know why. It's been that way a long time.

keep in mind if you choose south central MO, howell, shannon, texas county area it's mostly beef cattle and logging as far as "farming" for a living. There isn't many 100's of open acerage as out west for row crop growing.

West Plains is a nice place, i'm 30 miles north of it, we go there twice a month to get groceries.

I guess you have not seen the KANSAS girls.
