89 Ford range front dirve question. 4X4

Well have a friend who owns this ford ranger and it had 3 U-Joints bad in the front drive axles. I got two replaced but the inner one on the passenger side will not pull out of the pumpkin. So any body know how it comes out?? Do I have to drop the whole front axle assembly to do it??
Thanks

Old, there is either a bearing retainer plate on the outside of the differential housing held in place by four bolts. If you dont see the retainer plate, then the differential has to come all the way out. there is a C clip on the right hand axle shaft. Its one of those two styles.

there is a clip inside the diff that holds the right hand stub in, so yes you have to remove the diff from the housing to get it out.

We don"t take the frontend apart, jack it up high enough to have plenty of room under it. Wrap a small towel soaked in cold water around the axel next to the pumkin. Then fire up the cutting torch and cut the cross out of the U joint, takes a little doing putting the new one in, but lots faster then removing that whole frontend.

I can't help you with that old, but your friends lucky to have a 89 truck still, the salt kills them around here. My 99 Dakota just had the leaf spring shackle rot away, it busted off and now the spring assembly is hitting the floor of the bed!! Happened 2 weeks ago, I heard a bang, looked at truck but dident see anything wrong, noticed truck sitting lower, looked again and found the problem!
