OT imagine my surprise

Was assigned a 6' x 5' landing with steps today. Only thing is no one had made a material list, and it was 90 miles south of Omaha, rural Auburn Nebraska! So, I quick came up with a material list, stopped at Lowes, stopped at home for some specialty tools, found the place about 10:30am!
New house and the sewer had not been hooked up yet-10' deep trench where the platform was supposed to go. Good thing I had not built it first, as it would have been in their way.

I left my lumber on the garage pad and came home!

Aaaaahhhh yes... The joys of the building trades. That sorta thing has happened to me more times than I care to think about.

Makes a guy just wanna stay home some days...

The builder had told my shop it had to be done by tomorrow! Too bad they did not tell us of this snafu!

Been me, I would have gone ahead and nailed it up and put the steps on the left. Let them figure out how to backfill the hole.

I'm curious; do you attach a 'deck' to the boxing
(rim joist) or set on posts? I prefer to set it on
posts with a beam carrying the joists, keeping the
deck separate from the house. I do empathize with
you; went 75 miles to Marshalltown to start a house
with attached garage only to find no footing for the
garage. Homeowner said "Just set the garage walls on
scrap concrete blocks". I just said NO!!

How long will it be left to "Settle" before the
steps will be put in ?
Otherwise they may shift.
Not your problem ?

I lag bolt to the rim joist! The platform will have 2 posts, and the end of the steps-running parallel to house- will have 1 post. Looks like 1 will be directly on top of the 10' trench-not sure how to anchor that one at all!
