farming with walking boot

Three weeks ago, I had surgery on my left ankle to clean up some damaged cartilage. I've been out of the cast for a week now, but I'm stuck in this "walking boot" for at least a month.

Any ideas for something somewhat durable that I can wear over the boot to keep dust, dirt, rocks, grease, chemicals, and such out? Garbage bags are worthless, the sole of the boot cuts right through.

With duct tape as a reinforcement for the bottom and a couple strips up over the top - you might still be able to make a garbage bag work.

There are items for covering casted legs/arms for bathing. But I don't think they are tough enough to hold up to walking around outside either.

Buckle overshoes? Galashes? whatever ya call em. I got my last pair at TSC. I knew oldtimers that wore them on the farm over a pair of comfortable shoes all year round.

I have had both feet operated on to correct "hammer toe" and gout/arthritus in my big toe, along with other problems. My last surgery was Dec 28th. I had that damned boot on for a couple of weeks, then took it off and went to a tennis shoe. Still hobbeling a little.

I re broke my big toe because of that damned boot. The X-rays show one of the pins came out and the toe is about 50% now. It is not like it should be. The toe of that danged thing is open, with no protection and I stubbed my toe when I opened a wooden file cabinet door near the floor. I am sure that did it.

That toe needs to be enclosed somehow.

Good luck, Gene

Cement boots. Like rubber boots but bigger and
made to slip over you regular boots when doing
flat work.

I took the leg off an old pair of insulated coveralls, the kind that have a zipper in the leg. Had the end sewed shut and put me a draw string on the top. Busted my butt a time or two with that thing. Be careful!

I wore one for a couple months about a year and a half ago. I took an old truck floor mat and cut a V in the two sides so I could fold it around the heel. Then just wrapped it around the foot & leg and duct taped it. Not pretty by any means but it certainly helped. I doubt you can find any oversize boot that would ever fit over it, at least the kind I had.

I am using the same sort of boot at present, having snapped the tendon that controls up and down movement in the foot. Had it surgically repaired, then into a solid cast for a couple of months, now the 'moon boot'

My wife made a canvas cover for the boot. It keeps the boot reasonably clean. However, farm work is difficult in the boot. I am slow at climbing into tractors, walking around etc, and any heavy work, carrying etc is out.

I have to try to look after the foot as the surgeon said the repair is a one shot deal.
