Very offensive diesel exhaust

Ok, I have one. My 4020 seems to have a much more odorous diesel exhaust smell. In the shed it quickly irritates the eyes and just smells bad, very strong, with a much more punchent (spelling?) smell. I have got to beleive some of you have experienced this before. What would cause this, bad fuel, pump adjustment, injectors, etc.?

Could be bad injectors, maybe a little slow on time, or as simple as a stopped up air filter. How much black smoke it it putting out?

Also, THOROUGHLY check the complete intake system.

Besides the usual dirty filter, insects or rodents have been known to stop things up.

If it"s a later model with a dry air filter, it has a hidden, and EXPENSIVE safety filter as will as the main element.
Key# 2 in the drawing.

My 4320 is like that. I pulled the injectors and they tested fine. I don't know about yours, but I think mine is getting close to overhaul time.

I worked for a farmer in the 80s whose 4420(I think) spit raw diesel out the muffler from day 1. Never heard if/what they did for him!

Does it smell bad only when engine is cold/just started, or, all the time? Does the engine run smooth or rough? Mark

Thanks for the comments. It runs rough when started but then smooths out. The unusual smell I notice most when cold. I just bought the tractor and have only had it warm once, although the gauge did not show warm (I have to check that also). I ran it 10 miles home. It still smelled bad. I have it in a work spot in my shed now, the intake is the first item that will be checked. The precleaner is pretty dirty. Both dry filters will get checked today, and replaced. By the way at high RPM it also misses, even when warm; maybe indicates an intake issue. I just don't know if I was over max. RPM, another thing I will be checking. Thanks for your help. Paul

I don't know if you are burning much bio, but I encounter the same deal if I am running a lot of bio diesel. You get a tremendous amount of extra Nox emissions from bio fuels. You must be sensitive to it. Nox emissions are also known to be the leading cancer causers from exhaust emissions, so keep your exposure to it down.
