Update on 4010 throttle fix. Boy do I feel dumb! (pic)

So I tore the dash apart looking for a bolt to tighten to hold my throttle in position. My 4010 does not have a bolt down under the dash! Its right under the steering wheel! I thought maybe it was the bolt I needed to tighten all along but thought NO way could it be that easy! But sure enough. Gave it an 1/8 of a turn and now the throttle lever stays where I put it.

LOL, I may have done something like that, I'm just
not sayin. Aren't you the guy built the nice lookin
red dump trailer? How's that working out?

Yeah I built that dump trailer. I have hauled over a hundred tons in it already and it still looks like new! There were a few nay sayers saying it would bend and this and that but it is still straight and strong! I wish I had another one. LOL

Your JD 4010 should have the exact type of throttle linkage as what we pictured in earlier posts. If it does not then some one has taken something off. You will find tightening the bolt you have will not last very long and it can damage the top of the steering column. There is ZERO friction material under that top bolt. You are just rubbing steel on steel. It will not last long that way. That bolt is just to hold the cast piece to the outer column that had the throttle linkage on the bottom. The bolt in yours does not look like the correct one either. It looks like some one just put a regular bolt in the hole. It would not have the tapered end like the original would have had.

I have seen the clamp strap break and drop off. Then there is not an external clamp anymore. If you go back to the earlier post with the parts diagram. The clamp is #14 and the bolt is #13.

As for getting to the adjustment bolt you just need to remove the two bolts on each side of the top dash panel. Usually takes less than two minutes. Actually you can reach it with just the back panel removed if you have smaller hands/arms. That panel takes one bolt.

Not trying to start an argument. If you like things fixed right then you have not gotten that done yet. If you just want it to work for a short time then what you have done will be an emergency repair. Sorry about the bad news, your more than likely not done with it yet.

Listen to Seller.

He is 100% correct.

Tightening that incorrect bolt to put tension on the throttle AIN"T a good thing!

I had the front panel and the top dash wrap piece off. There is the cam lobe thing and it is almost right on top of the steering box. There isn't anything between the cam lobe and the steering box. Could my tractor have a later type of steering box or something? I definitely want it fixed the right way. I will go out and take it back apart and take some pictures of what it looks like.

Justin: The square looking clamp #14 wraps around the steering column. It is replaceable without removing the column. It wraps around and there is a nut welded in one side and a hole in the other. So you spread it open and the close it around the column. You put the nut half toward the column and the hole toward the top. So when you put the bolt #13 through the hole and then through the nut it holds itself together.

IF this clamp is broken it can fall clear off. Someone may be broke it and took it off. Then they just jammed the bolt at the top of the column.

If the clamp is clear gone than you should be able to see the slots in the bottom of the outer column. This is where the isolator/friction strip #12 goes in. This material is on the inside of the outer column. You can't see it very well. You want the clamp to be across the cut outs. That way the column can contract a little on the isolator/friction material.
