Farmall F12 Paint Question

It's been quite a while since I drug this home, but it's getting
close to being painted. (sorry Sweetfeet, can't let it rust any more!)
My question is, were the rear axles painted the same color as the rest?
Meaning the actual axle shafts that the rims clamp to, not the housings.

(quoted from post at 23:19:00 05/29/13) They were not painted, makes it darn near impossible to slide the wheels in and out.
Thanks. Any good ideas on how to preserve them if left unpainted?
Grease would probably work, but would be messy! :)

Mine are still rusty, but I have been told to clean them real well with a twisted wire wheel or blast them clean and then wipe them down with a very light coating of Lard. Supposedly as the lard and steel oxidize it turns black. (have seen the results on old tools and they are black as coal) If you don't plan on adjusting your wheels after putting them on You could clear coat em or paint em black

I spray mine with PB Blaster couple times a year and they don't rust. It's been 7 or 8 years now but I'm sure there are better ways to coat them so they dont' rust. John

Never tried it, but what about a bees wax or car wax? easy to come off if needed, but would seal everything up. Just a thought.

Some places have it, some dont but a rattle can of flat clear coat paint will both protect it, and make it look right. Me personally, I just paint the axles.

A product called fluidfilm. It's made of lanolin. Spray it on a rusty surface, wipe off the excess, and let it dry for a couple weeks. It dries to a hard finish and retains that dark, wet look. It looks good on faded paint surfaces, too.

Royse,

It's really neat. I hate to see them painted, but you have to do what you have to do.

If you do decide to try fluidfilm or something similar to preserve it rusty, please post pics of what it looks like.

Some guys have also said they just spritz them down with diesel every year.
