Cabin filter for a 2004 malibu maxx?

Chevy dealer wants $68 to change cabin air filter. So I called Auto Zone and O'riley, both said they have no listing for a cabin air filter. So does such an animal exist for the 2004 or is this a dealer scam?

Your car may or may not have one. My "01 Chevy Silverado had one, but others did not. Notice I said it HAD one. I finally got tired of not getting any GOOD air-flow through the A/C vents, so I hunted for and found that air filter and removed it. Yes, it was dirty, but the A/C actually will cool the cab now. It never did a good job before, and I bought the truck brand new.

Conclusion--those cabin air filters are just another way to get into your pocket.
 
Dave, Many thanks. Went to U-tube and found it's some where near the evaporator.

Many thanks again. Wonder why the zone and riley's didn't even list one?

Dave, Went to U-tube and it looked easy. NOT! Spent an hour. Removed the panel where U-tube said it would be, NOT! Removed glove box. There is always that one screw that you can't get out and will not replace. Found the place where a filter should go. Snapped open the cover, which is directly above the fan and NO FILTER. This car is 9 years old and didn't come with a filter. There looks like a place for one, but no filter. May call Napa or Advanced and see if they have a listing for it.

Guess it's better to spend an hour in the garage instead of paying the dealer $68 for something that's not there.

Actually, all the dirt will now collect on your a/c evaporater core and posibly the heater core. Then you will have to clean them because of poor air flow. The filter is easier. Mark
 
Exactly. Have had many a farm truck apart where the good idea was to remove the filter. Then the evaporator gets all the bean chaff and corn husks.
 
I have to change mine in the Freightliner about every 60 days, it is cheaper than washing out the A/C coils.
