OT?Record Tornadoes

Heard on the news this morning, Oklahoma holds two records for tornadoes -

Highest winds - 318 mph, Moore, Ok. 1999

Largest - 2.6 miles wide, El Reno, Ok, last Friday.

I"m sure they wish someplace else held those records.

Nancy the scary part was that El Reno storm formed in 30 minutes flat. That was so common when I flew over the Oklahoma prairies in the late 1970s. Had a few weather recalls. Made it from Gage, OK to Enid in 10 minutes one time.

Well.............you just have to wonder how long those records go back? Not very in relative terms I'll bet.

So,not really long enough to even cover any reasonable weather cycles, let alone long enough to say EVER.

Not to diminish the seriousness of these recent tornadoes, but here's a link to a doozy. Better warning saves a lot of lives today. It seems like some towns are a magnet for tornadoes. Moore, Oklahoma appears to be one. Murphysboro, and Gorham, Illinois have been hit multiple times. When I was a kid, if the sun went under a cloud, someone went on top of the school in Gorham to watch for another one.

Mrs. Howell, up till last Friday, the largest tornado was the Moore, Ok. in 1999 at 2.5 miles wide according to some NOAA reports I read yesterday. Like you say, bet they wish they didn't hold those records.

There is a thing on the net that states that the Gov. is doing some experiments with the weather and this is what is causing this odd weather. If it is true or not who knows or maybe it is a way for the Lord saying hey wake up.
Yep storms have been getting bigger and stronger in the last year or so plus a lot of other odd weather

Nancy, pray for my daughter, she lives in Moore and went to college there.I keep telling her to come back to WV but she loves it there

The problem this year is the cold. Tornadoes and storms are formed when warm air collides with cool air. This spring has been one of the coolest on record for the Midwest plains states - hot air from the Southwest moves up and the contact point is in Oklahoma. Last year temps in Oklahoma and Kansas were in the mid 80s in April and only got warmer from their - most of the stormy weather was to north and east of those states - hence the massive drought. This year the cool weather is sitting over Kansas and jalf of Oklahoma and the "line" between the cool air and the hot air is right over top of Oklahoma City. And the temperature differences are extreme - leading to extreme weather.

As for "recorded history of tornadoes" - look up how well they kept the stats 50 years ago - let alone 100 years ago.

According to that eminent climatologist Morgan Freeman these big storms are the product of man-caused climate change. That's good enough for me.

The Red.......what kind of bird were you flying?? I did a quick computation and saw that Gage is 110 miles from Enid. If you made it in 10 minutes, that computes to 660 miles per hour!

I get a kick out of the "global warming" crowd.
If it wasn't for global warming we would still be under a glacier !!! It all is a cycle mother nature is in control of.

he he... funny how in this short thread it's been supposed both that all of mankind couldn't possibly change the climate/weather, but somehow the government can! :?

It may only be a small comfort, but (if I remember correctly) in Moore & OKC they have passed an ordinance requiring all new housing to have a storm shelter/safe room.

Must be two that size. Read on the internet that the prior record was a tornado in NE that was 2.5 miles wide.

Can you imagine seeing a tornado that monstrous?

It totally depends upon what kind of tail wind he had. 'Would be nice to hear back from him and hear the details. Interesting.

I worked the Joplin 2011 storm. I have seen my share of tornado aftermath. I would agree that every house should consider haveing a safe room for such purpose.
