Motor Oil Brands

Do any of you use (Rural King) brand oil. It is produced by Citgo. It is on sale for less than $2 a quart. Most oil is priced around $4 to $5 per quart. I just wonder how good of oil it is since it is so much less than name brand oil? Anyone have any opinions?

Just buy the better stuff and live stress free, not worrying about whether it's good enough. It costs an extra 1/3 cent per mile. You can buy Valvoline synthetic for $20/5quart. Same cost as conventional oil, but for sure as good as the best dino oil.

Check the container to see if it is reprocessed oil. That may be the reason the price is so much less. I used to run reprocessed oil in high mileage vehicles. A vehicle is kinda like an alcoholic, it doesn't care what the brand is as long as it gets a drink!

I can't add to this. Citgo used to be Cities Service. Old line US oil company. Used to work tugs in the summer in high school. We'd go to the back waters of Louisiana with oil barges and haul it out of the swamps where they drilled it. I remember one river we snaked through more than once. Mermentau River. Had to work 4 full sized barges through there like a snake but it was fun....for a kid.

KF When I catch it like it was Thursday I always buy a couple of cases. Us it for the old stuff like adding a quart here and there in some things. Over 100 engines here on this farm so always a use for it. Not re processed oil and I have never noticed any problems.

I use the brand oils, however I got 2 cases of RK oil on sale for under $2. Use multi grade oils in my 20 hp kohler work fine up to 60 hours. From 60-75 hrs it seems to brake down and engine starts using oil. I'm at 60 hrs, oil is clean and full. In 15 hrs I'll be changing it to RK 30w detergent. Let you know what happens.

The hydraulics in my terramite calls for 10w40, 5 gallons, change every 300 hrs. I've always used the brand names. Last time I slipped and went 375 hrs. Oil, for the first time, was dirty and smelled bad. The oil must have broken down or something.

Next change I'm trying RK. If nothing else change it more often. In the past, 300 hrs, the oil that came out was like new, clean and no smell. I would filter it and use it my 25 year old mowers.

I have a friend that like to push oil changes on a chevy malabu. Her car will go 3000 miles, uses no oil. 4000 miles, 1/2 quart. 5000 miles 1 1/2 quart. Beginning to think the oil the chevy dealer uses, is like the oil in my kohler, it's breaking down and engine is using it.

My new kawasaki mule calls for a special MC oil. It's not cheap. Because it new, I'm going with the expensive stuff.

My 60+ year old tractors is getting switched to RK, so are my mowers.

Perhaps that's why we should change oil.

The additive package is usually better in name brand oils. If you have a University close by or an unbiased oil blender you may be able to get a better picture.

I usually use cheap oil in engines nearing the end of their lives and name brand in by newer/better stuff.

Thanks Guys for all info. I think that older engines that are used less and sit most time will get RK oil and new hard workng engines will get brand name oil until I try it for a while anyway.

(quoted from post at 05:47:08 06/08/13) Sam's Club has Phillips Troparctic oil by the case for $2.24 a quart.

I've been using this in my van and it seems to hold up fine over 5-6,000mi. I haven't had any bad smells from it during the change. It is a little better oil as its a synthetic blend.

I have not seen reprocessed oil for many years. It came in 2 gallon cans.Merit gas stations sold oil in glass bottles for 15 cents a quart. It was thick and green. My father in law had a kerosene truck in the 30s.He sold kerosene for 8 cents a gallon. He sold a lot of motor oil in 2 gallon cans. All different prices. There was special oil for Fordson tractors. He went for a load of kerosene one day.Got there at noon hour.No one in the office so he went out back.No one there.Cans were lined up for filling with different labels. There was just one fill spigot.A hose ran up to a tank car on the railroad track.I wonder if motor oil is still sold that way.
