JD 2555 overheating

Overheating has gradually become an issue with our jd 2555 4x4 sgb. last hay season 2012 seemed to be running hotter. This year way hot. Radiator and side screens are clear coolant drained and radiator flushed, thermostat removed. Had this tractor almost 15 years. No indications of a cracked head. Heat gauge pegs in 20 mins or so and radiator will overflow. No coolant loss around WP.

Some of those water pumps had a plastic impeller and over time the vanes would break off causing an over heating issue. If the radiator is clear, and the thermostat has been removed, I would check the water pump. Also give the fan a wiggle, and see if the fan moved from front to back.

Those tractors have a viscous fan drive like the fan clutch on a car. When it is running hot shut the engine off and see if the fan spins. It should turn "stiff" if the drive is working. If the drive is bad the fan will spin easy as the drive is not turning the fan. The drive will never lock up solid but when you shut the engine off it will stop turning right away if working properly. As others have said the plastic water pump impellers have caused problems also.

I second looking at locking the fan as the next cheap easy step. Most JD dealers should have the kit on the shelf 4 bolts job done. Did this to a 4955 with simallar issues

Rad flushed with what?
When filling the cooling system, mix the antifreeze with distilled water. Tap water contains minerals that leaves an insulating thermal layer on the coolant heat exchanger surfaces.
Pull the hood and nose cone. You will be surprised how plugged the rad core fins are with oily mud. Don't waste you time trying to dab away at the job from the side access screens. Don't bend the fins either with too much water or air.

We have a 2750 was the same way.. I removed
the radiator, ( after I replace the themostat
& hose's & checked the Water pump) Used High
pressure washer after it soaked for a day
& was amazed how much came out of it.. Soaked
it down again with cleaner & pressure washed
again from bothsides & still kept blowing out
dirt.. After the 3rd time I reinstalled the
radiator, & they tractor hasn't ran this cool
in years.... Just say'en.....

Thanks to all for your replies. It was in fact the plastic impeller that had mostly disintegrated. The rebuild kit came with a metal impeller that solved the problem!

After you remove the thermostat you need to plug the bypass. The thermostat seals it off when installed and working correctly. As the thermostat opens, the bottom of it stops the coolant from entering the bypass hose. I removed the hose and plugged the connections so that no coolant can bypass the radiator. Made a big difference.
