C charging problems

I have a C that I have messed with for 6 months trying to get the electrical system to charge. I had taken the generator and regulator to get it tested and they said the generator was fine but regulator was bad. so I have polarized the system and tried about everything else. Recently I decided maybe the generator wasn't working so I took it to another place and they said it worked but did not take the regulator because of it being new. The guy ask me if the regulator is positive ground I did not know there was a difference so is there a way to determine if the regulator
is correct

If your generator is original there were two types of generators used on the C so you need to get the Delco Remy # off the serial plate so you can get the correct regulator as there is also two regs that were used both positive gnd.

Couple things, the shop may have the genny Polarized at Pos or Neg ground? so just be sure to Polarize BEFORE you start her up. If she charges ONLY if you run a temporary jumper to dead ground the gennys FLD post but NOT otherwise, the genny itself is okay so the VR may be bad or not well grounded (insure it is) or the wires bad from FLD on Genny to FLD on VR.

Jim has already posted the Troubleshooting Procedure and I agree if not labeled the VR may not be polarity sensitive??? but we cant guarantee that from here.

I read in my old Motors shop manual that most all regulators will operate on either pos or neg ground . The only difference being that some have the two cutout or field relay contact points made of different metals to reduce the transfer of metal from one contact to the other in the regulators marked for a specific polarity. They say that runing one of these regulators on the wrong polarity will result in slightly shorter contact life, so not a big deal.

Motors might be right 15 years ago. Some today have diodes and Zener voltage regulators that will fry. Jim
