JD 2440 Altenator won't charge

Have a '76 2440 JD w/ 6000+ hours. The Alt isn't charging and w/ the age of this tractor I don't think its just a loose connection. Is there a rebuild kit for the alt or swap out?

Before you spend any money,take it to your local NAPA store and have the alternator tested.Then you will know (for sure) that the alternator is the culprit....

Mine didn't either until I put a $100. voltage regulator from JD on it. The VR is behind the batteries on the back of the instrument panel. It takes a snake to get it out. The VR was melted. Maybe get a cheaper VR at NAPA IF that's the problem.

Did you remove side panels on each side of dash to access the VR?

No, I didn't. With a loader on the tractor, not much would be gained to take the right one off. And, the VR is pretty much on the right side, so wouldn't gain a lot by taking the left one off unless you want to remove the batteries; then, there's plenty of room!
