When to say enough is enough.

At what age do you guys stop adding to your tractor shopping list or do you just go on and on?

I started collecting around 28 years ago and have built up a good collection of British as well as US models Ive wanted but still fancy a few more.

At what age do you think it wise to say enough is enough and stop buying?

Models I still fancy are:
Ford TW 35.
Case 930 with the fuel tank upfront.
International 660 diesel.
Massey Ferguson 98 (dream on as they are way out of my price range)
Oliver/Cockshutt/White 2255 (Cat V8).
Massey Harris 55/555 diesel.
Ford 9600.
John Deer 820 B/D or 830.
International 1206/1246
Massey Ferguson 2805 4x4

I guess I may get a couple of these but think I need to stop collecting before long.

I read about a man at the John Deere combine plant picking up a new combine, he was 89 and his wife was 88. I would think 90 would be a start, money is the only factor that stops me.

If one can afford it,and the interest is still there, there is no such thing as "too old"! My interest and love of old iron will cease the day that they carry me out feet first!

About the same time they pry my cold, dead fingers from around the steering wheel.....

A 70 + I think about that when I find something but you then I say what the heck the kids can sell it or whatever. Wished I knew about your fancy for the 660 iH they are a little hard to come by but had a neighbor sell an original farm fresh one just a few days ago. MH 55s are not that rare over here and ih 1206 are dime a dozen.

Bill, too many tractors is never enough! Now too many women is another matter! Keep to the tractors they are cheaper!
LOL And happy collecting......Sam

Bill,

I"m convinced that when a guy quits dreaming (about what he wants), right then is when they put the lid on the casket. Don"t ever let your dreams die, and you should live a long and healthy life. I"ve got enough dreams and projects to last another 30 years, so I"ve got to live to at least 98.

Wishing you a long and happy & healthy life as you persue your dreams of collecting a few more vintage pieces of fine iron!

Bill,

I often think the same thing and did go almost two years without buying any more. Would like to focus on restoring a few that I already have. Just enjoy hunting for them too much. Do what you enjoy the most and have no regrets.

There's a time to stop? I'm not there yet I guess! :)
You've posted some great pictures of the shows over there.
How about some pictures of your collection?
I'd love to see those too!

Well, I'm 88 yoa, and still fixing lawn tractors and other things, too. Wife has been very sick, so i've been tending to her right now, so don't have time to go down to garage and work. But, i'll get back to it. Still have all my senses and smarts, still driving my car and truck. No accidents, eyes good, health good, and i eat right. Also-a beer a day, don't smoke, live right, my kids are healthy-what more kin i ask for?! Best way to live long: Work hard, be honest with folks, eat right, and drink one beer a day! Uh-oh! Time for that one right now! G'nite! RJ

Palmer only sold or traded a few tractors from his collection. His collection went at auction about two years after he died.
