John deere 720 flywheel revisited

Howdy,

Back to workin on the 720 again finally. I had an
issue with the flywheel walking on it. You all
helped me to realize I had the taper lock
flywheel. I found instructions for putting one of
those monsters back on and finally had a chance to
do it today. I got it on tight with good endplay.
When I started up the tractor the flywheel scraped
against a shield that sits behind it. Now, this
wouldn't be an issue if it were just a scraping.
I have bent things sometimes that might cause it.
The problem is that you can turn the flywheel over
and not hear anything for a time and then feel and
hear it scrape. It almost seems like the flywheel
is wobbling. It feels that way too somewhat when
the tractor is running. It doesn't shake horribly
but it is noticeable and feels different than the
usual vibration from it being a two banger.
Anyone have thoughts about the flywheel?
Appreciate the help. God bless.

We had the same problem with our '48 G. Splines were incorrectly machined on both ends of the crankshaft (could hold the clutch hub in place either). Finally took out the crankshaft and took it to a machine shop to build up and machine new splines. That solved the problem.

Howdy,

The thing I am more concerned with is the fact that the flywheel appears to be closer to the main case at different points. I'm not sure what is causing this as it was not a problem before I removed the flywheel earlier. Something is not right with how it went on I'm guessing. I did the whole "hit it once and tighten then repeat till you cannot tighten it anymore" process. Just puzzled right now. It wouldn't bother me a bit if the rubbing were even and the extra shake wasn't there.

My uncle has one on a 720 D electric start. It stayed put for years and then walked some. When reinstalling it ended up back on too far so as the starter drive would rub all the time. I found a large enough machinery washer to put behind it to space it out.
