Round baler tune up

My 644 New Holland is just not baling like it used too. Slowly getting worse as far as harder to start a bale, hay rolling up the belts and gathering on top of the baler. Also chatters when turning. This baler used to work so great just a few years ago but now baling with it is frustrating.

I'm thinking I'm gonna start by looking the belts over, maybe they are worn or stretched. How do I check for stretch or wear? if stretched but not worn, can I shorten and reuse??

Any other tips??

Also, I didn't get an operators manual when I bought this baler. Sure wish I would of as this alone would likely fix some of my problems. Where can I get a manual for this baler, are they available online? or the dealer?

I think you answered your own questions. You NEED a manual with a baler, round or square. That's a popular baler. I'm sure you can find a manual either on line or at the dealer.

When you get a manual it will give you the length of the belts. If you have to shorten them you will need a lacing tool and lacers. Not a hard job to do but if your local dealer has a lacing machine that fits over the whole width of the belt it may be worth having them do it. The smaller lacers that fit in a vice are fine but more time consuming to use and you will have to assure that the lacings are squeezed properly. My experience has been that the belts start to get smooth and do not grab the hay enough to start the hay rolling in the chamber.Your manual will get you going in the right direction.
Good Luck,Andy

I have a full factory service manual for the 644. The belts can be shortened, but for tracking they should all be shortened and ideally be within 1/4" of each other, though the manual says within 1.5", but that seems a little much. Factory belt length is 343"

Check ebay for a manual. I bought one for my JD 435. A little search on the internet might turn up others.
