news media only reports the negative things

Every year is a diesel fest at the county fair grounds. When it's over, the news media only seems to report on the arrests and behavior of those attending.
diesel fest

Just wholesome fun by a group of responsible citizens. Only 519 moving violations, only 27 DUI's and only 5 felonies, down from 7 last year.

I doubt if my community will be able to mount the effort and gather the resources to lure such a wonderful event away from its current site. At least I hope that is the case.

Any time there is such a large event of a competitive nature that brings out-of-state people, you will get the bad apples. This report pales in comparison to what happens during the Black Expo in Indy every year.

I do think the event organizers and Scheid Diesel should be billed for the necessary law enforcement overtime and any state and county equipment damaged keeping their participants under control.

I am really surprised it didn't garner a piece from an enviro nazi. I enjoy the sound, power and smell of diesel, but the excessive black smoke crap on the street is getting annoying and is disrespectful. This un-responsible "tuning" of diesel trucks is what has brought on the diesel regulations that have removed almost all the reasons for diesel. It is not 1963, diesels don't need to smoke to be powerful. I would be more impressed with posting the power numbers the tuners do with no smoke.

Hmm. One week earlier, the Woodward Dream Cruise was held here in Oakland County. Attended by over one million people, it's known as the "world's largest one-day car show." The Oakland County Sheriff's Department made only a few arrests. "You could count them on one hand," according to the Sheriff.

What's up with Indiana?
Arrest count low at Dream Cruise.

The quoted stats pretty well tell the story,
1 crash and 755 traffic tickets and 27 DUI"s -- it was not about public safety it was about generating income for the city and state off of majority out of towners so there won"t be any political fallout. I bet that one thing the vast majority of the attendees had in common was they had a JOB, I venture that guess because that is not a cheap hobby, so called ""law enforcement"" is primarily interested in people who can pay fines, thats why the dope heads and welfare winos can run up and down the road in POS vehicles without insurance, sticker or anything else that is mandatory for the rest of us. Those cops never think of the economic benefit to their town generated by the money those visitors spend and they don"t care because as public employees they are accountable to no one this day and time.

The mainstream media does indeed cover some protests different from others FOR EXAMPLE a violent (involving property destruction and civil disobedience) Occupy Wall Street protest versus say a more peaceful family attended Tea Party Protest, and yes tend to seek out and report on any violence, its just how they do things. Even if 99% of a protest is calm and peaceful, the media will seek out and show on TV that one less then peaceful scene......I guess it makes for better TV then the quiet calm peaceful scenes.

I spent over 20 years as a cop, some of it policing events like this, 2 of the Woodstock Anniversary festivals, various sporting events, etc. I can assure you that your post is 99.99% horse puckey in my area. Most of the time it was all we could do to keep the drunken retards from engaging in outright rioting. But I guess riots should be allowed to happen because they are such revenue generators for the local businesses.......

I have to disagree a little. Around here,it's the negative for about a third of the newscast. The rest of it's taken up by fluff stories telling yuppies the best places in west Michigan to get drunk on the weekend.

You are right about the diesel noise and black smoke. I can find no excuse for the excess noise of the diesels (or the motorcycles) just to say "look at me!" The clouds of black smoke are really uncalled for and they deserve to be fined for??? littering?

Our local police seem to be unwilling to crack down on it. What ever happened to "disturbing the peace" laws?

Did you take into account the class of people you were dealing with? there are different people attracted to different events. No one said anything about these people trying to ''riot'', funny, I have attended a lot of events where people were drinking beer and having a good time in my life and I have never been where the police had to break up anything remotely close to a riot.

Wee Fest takes place not too far from me. It's a 3 day, drunken country musical festival that is known for DUI's, assaults, fights and worse (you know, good old wholesome country). Then we have the tractors/truck pulls that always results in a large number tickets shortly after while all these "men" are showing just how tuff they are cause they got big tires on jacked up trucks that have never been off road. Wanna prove yer a man? Join the service and do something for your country. Try taking care of your kids and buy them something or do something with them instead of leaving them home with no toys while you go drink beer with yer buds and having conversations that your kid might have...."mine's bigger, no mine's bigger, no mine's bigger, x brand is better".

Sorry guys see too much of the stuff around here.

Back in my days with a newspaper, the publisher once told me, and I'm by no means trying to defend him, that even in bad times, people will still buy newspapers to read the bad news.

The bottom line is, bad news is what sells.

Traditional Farmer,
Do liers figure or do figures lie?

Here is the back side to the post. The ACLU has a suit against our county. We can only have a max of 268 people in our jail. Before the fest, there were only 30 empty beds. I have a feeling, the cops were told to hand out more warnings and not arrests.

There should be more positive comments from the news media, including radio and TV. Look at how many people didn't break the law and had fun. It brings in over $2 million.

News reported that the numbers of arrests will go higher all the law agencies turn in their numbers.

I think the average age at the Dream cruise is quite a bit higher than most events. Lots of gray hair there!!!

One of the problems of trying to enforce emissions laws or noise laws is that you have to have the proper equipment to measure it, the proper training to use the equipment and the proper upkeep of said equipment. It all costs a lot of money. In turn, you are then put in a position where you have to go out and try and hunt down enough tickets to cover the cost of all that. If you don't get the tickets then you get accused by the taxpayers of wasting money on equipment you didn't need. How do you win?

On the loud bikes- I used to write a lot of bikes. No baffles or muffling whatsoever, really loud and in residential areas where people rightly complained. I'd right the ticket which automatically came with a Correction Slip that allowed the owner to have the issue fixed within 24 hrs and the ticket would be dismissed. The guy would take the bike to the Harley dealer who ALWAYS signed off on them as being just fine. The ticket would be turned in, dismissed and the bike would be just as loud. I'd write him again, same story. We could never get the dealer/inspector in trouble over it even though it was obvious he was either falsifying the statement of correction or was totally deaf. How do you win?

Well, come to Morristown for a 4th of July drunkfest and you'll see the other side. Or get on You Tube and view the riot at the 2nd Woodstock rerun at the former Griffiss AFB. I've been called to break up fights at everything from a backyard barby to an RV park the catered exclusively to Seniors. Two drunked up 75 year olds fighting over a woman...that's amazing to see.

So, when someone is arrested, it's the fault of law enforcement? Sorry, Los Angeles Alvin, but don't agree. I'm of the opinion that individuals should be held responsible for their actions. And having a job is no justification for hooliganism.

George, I'm waiting for Part II of your post, where you tell us the good news that didn't get reported. Perhaps the good news is that this event won't be allowed to be held in Terre Haute next year and that its organizers are under criminal investigation.

Or were you just making a joke that nobody got?

Let's compare it with another, albeit larger, organized event: the Experimental Aircraft Association convention/airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Attended by hundreds of thousands of people and tens of thousands of aircraft, it attracts a wide cross section of attendees. Airplanes from J-3 Cubs to P-51s and commercial airliners fly in. People also arrive in cars, RVs and quarter-million dollar motor homes. Nonetheless it is very well-organized and safe. Assault and larcency are unheard of at Oshkosh. That said, every year there are a few accidents at or near the airshow, sometimes fatal. Not surprising given the number of aircraft in close proximity. These accidents are dutifully reported by the local press. Some, like the crash of Jack Roush's corporate jet a few years ago, receive national attention. Yet I've never heard anyone say "they only report the bad news about Oshkosh", even though the convention receives little attention outside Wisconsin.

Well Mark Be Miserable, I never said it was the fault of law enforcement when someone was arrested, I said that the law is not applied equally, the law as it pertains to traffic fines, DWI's and other high profit tickest is only for the people who can and will pay, the system does not make money feeding and housing deadbeats between welfare checks.

MARK Part II,
Good news:
It brings in about $2 million + fines.
People at the fair grounds are well behaved.
No reports of anyone getting hurt at the event.
It is somewhat of a family event, peddle tractor tractor pull.
They have all kinds of events, google it, diesel drag racing at the track, truck pulls, people bring campers, stay at the fair grounds and make a 3 day event.
The people who put it have a diesel repair business. I think it great that a business can make such an event that grows every year.

The bad news is a result of activities outside the fair grounds. It is almost like spring break at Dayton, girls and guys gone wild in the back of trucks in local business parking lots. After hours, one parking lot was closed and guarded.

Arrests may have been lower because our jail has an over crowding problem. There were less than 40 open beds and our jail is in trouble with the ACLU for over crowding

Guess you could say all the problems revolve around young hormones, beer, under age drinking, lots of black diesel smoke, reckless driving on the streets and in parking lots.
