Sometimes, Ya Just Gotta Shake Yer Head

Not mad you understand; just plain amazed at this world sometimes.

A few days ago while planting wheat, I notice that one of the tires on the 966 is weeping fluid around one of the lugs. A wet spot about the size of your fist.

Call the tire shop and tell 'em that I've got a leaky tube; okay, service truck will be right out with a new tube.

Service man looks at the tires on the ol' gal and tells me I need new tires and tubes. They are old and just plain wore out. Huh? They have 90% of their tread left!?

Sorry, no use even breaking it down as I know what I'll find in there. Ya need new tires and tubes.

Well, what do I know? I need this tractor back in the field. Get the tires coming from your supplier.

Yesterday, I'm on my way to get more seed and I run into the service truck headed my way. I tell him the tractor is parked in the yard and I'll be back in a couple of hours.

I get back and he is just finishing up installing the new tires. Tells me, "Oh, nothing wrong with the tires; valve stem was torn on the tube".

Old tires are okay? "Yeah, they can be reused, you just need a couple of new tubes".

I give up!

Sounds like the guy didn't want to get dirty that day, To bad it cost the customer and didn't help the business with building a relation with their customer trust.

Well I suppose he could have put on the new tires and tubes, made a bunch more money than just tubes, and you would have not had any recourse. So at least he was honest.

Read again.

He DID install the new tires.

You got hosed. I had a tire guy pull a similar stunt on me one time. He never came back. I found a different tire dealer.

Allen,
You really need to paint those front wheels white. We have been busting on you for two years to get that done! You better git-R-done; NOW!!! "wink"
Loren, the Acg.

mistake all right, plain stupid! i would have made them put my old ones back on with new tubes as requested. customers are right most times, lol.

Last year, I had a flat on the left rear of my D19. The fellow from our local Co op said whoever installed the tire two years ago pinched the tube. Two years before it went flat?

He then put it back on--and pinched the tube. Same result again. After the left rear went flat three times, the right rear felt left out and it went flat. They fixed the right rear with one try. The left rear finally stayed fixed after the fourth try after a discussion with the Co op manager.

At least there was no fluid in them, just air, but the guy kept complaining because they were used tires. Any tire that's already on a tractor is gonna be a used tire. And I'm not about to put $2,000 worth of new tires on a $2,000 tractor.

I don't get it, isn't it relatively easy to simply avoid a pinched tube by partially inflating the tube, then letting the air back out, then inflating to correct pressure ? I'm no tractor tire installation expert, but have done my own for years now, loaded with CA CL etc. it appears to be relatively easy, well at least for these smaller ones, ( you know, ones that are not taller than you are LOL !)

Every time I need something fixed it's that way. That generator can't be fixed you need a new one,
I can fix that radiator, but you would be better off with a new one.The overhead door wouldn't go up in my shop. "that's an old door,it's not worth fixing". I had the electric motor rebuilt and it works fine now.

I would definitely be HOT enough to give the manager of the place a piece of my mind and I would want a significant discount on the tires I didn't need...

I don't get what the age of the tires had to do with it - even if they were worn out. Unless they were so worn the tube was pushing through the tire.

I helped my brother mount what had to be half tread 40 year old 18.4 X 38s on his 1456 last summer. He thought buying new tubes was going too far but I told him I wouldn't help him a second time if he put the old tubes back in that came with the tires.

Alan. Reminds me of the time we blew out a tire on the 1 ton ford. Took one of the rears off and put it up front so we could drive another 20 miles into Rice Lake to the CO-OP .Sign out front said "Special on tires". Well good for us. Went inside and talked with the manager who said"I seen you limp in with that 3 legged dog" We don't do split rims and the price of that tire will cost ya 150.00 plus tax. Place was full of customers who busted out laughing when I told him I could by a new tire for 1/3 the cost at Farm & Fleet. His reply was "they will only last 1/2 as long as our tire" some customers doubled over when I said "Thats alright, I'll ONLY DRIVE IT HALF AS MUCH". Told My son" Lets get outa here. Didn't want the deed and abstract to this store, only wanted a tire. They do remember us . We got new front tires for our 706 at a reduced rate at the same CO-OP GO FIGURE!!! We got a new tire for the 706 and a used rim. Put two new tubes in the rear tires, boxed old tubes up. We are good to go for a while. If you were close enough I would give you the best tube we removed( no Patches on it) for free. Regards LOU

I used to reduce the pressure in the tires for better traction when plowing. The tires were old but looked good so I couldn't understand why I had a flat tire every year and had to get the tubes patched. Third time my mechanic told me that even though the tires looked fine they had fine cracks on the inside not even visible but the cracks would open up when driving and would pinch the tube. I should either run a higher pressure or get new tires. So I bought new tires and kept plowing with a low pressure. Never had a flat tire since.

No picture of that guy's boss putting your 90% rears back on, and another of him driving off with the brand spankin new 100% rears in his possession?

Mark

I think if the guy told me the old tires were still good, he would have been leaving with those new tires in his truck even if I had to pay to dismount and remount the old ones. 90% tires and you told him to put new ones on? Sorry bro, but you needed more coffee that day!
