OT - Rear Axle Seal, 1992 Chevy Half Ton Suburban 2WD

Left axle seal is leaking oil onto the brakes. Time to replace. 309k miles. Probably will replace the bearings too. What's the process for this? I've pulled a lot of axles but all 1930s through 1970s. Do I need to open the differential and deal with C-clips? Is the bearing pressed into the axle housing end instead of pressed onto the axle shaft? That's what a mechanic said.

Depends on the make of the rear axle. It's been awhile for me too, but I'm guessing that if there is a cover on the differential, then there will be C-clips to deal with.

bearing is not pressed on the axle on the half ton. drop the cover, remove the retaining bolt that holds the small shaft the spider gears run on, slide the shaft out, walk the spider gears out by turning the axle, then push the end of the axle in and remove the c-clip. slide the axle out. pop the seal, and pull the bearing out. check the axle shaft for a groove worn it it.

The bearing will be fine as long as the axle is ok, if it is worn, just replace it and the bearing.
