At a pull Saturday, a large diesel tractor that had not been out in a few years, but was always formidable competition, came to compete. When he hooked, a very impressive cloud of smoke was sent up, but instead of the usual black, it was mainly white. I recall that last time I saw this tractor pull, it was the same situation. Why is the smoke white? Mine puts up white smoke on start-up but then it turns black when warmed up a little.

They are so close to not running when hooked that the diesel pouring into them is almost not burning at all. The engine must twist into RPM and get turbo compression to fill the low compression cylinders. When they get an air charge the they start to fire. (before that they are near worthless)
The increased combustion chamber volume really makes a dramatic difference in the total Horse power generated. They often explode taking the cylinders right out of the block!! Jim.

The white smoke is water that's injected, usually when it's that white they have a little too much water. From what I understand it's actually burning more water than it is diesel on a pass. The water is used to cool but it actually becomes steam and makes power.

There was a video of a highly modified IH tractor with water injection that blew up. The water also cleans all the carbon up. The pistons and cylinders were so clean they looked like new. There was a gaping hole the size of a football in the side of the block though.

Water is not compressible, unlike air, so too much water can
push the limits of space between the piston and head.

Thanks for the replies but this one stayed white after he got his RPMs up and was the same about fifteen minutes later on another hook. He has no water injection.
