Here's an oddity

Was mowing (tractor)the orchard yesterday and found a nest bunnies. Couldn't be a week old. I have never seen rabbits born this late in the year (NW MO). Maybe the wooly worms are wrong and we're in for a very mild winter!

Been seeing a LOT of those wooly worms! Where abouts in NW MO are you? I know I've asked brfore, but the memory is getting bad!

They'll likely make it, I find them here on occasion, the mother will come back and milk em early am, and before dusk, don't take long before they're weaned, running around, not to sharp yet, easy to catch, and easy prey. I relocated one just out of the nest, and he proceeded to literally move into my fenced in garden, funny he nibbled some lettuce and this and that, had every escape route, tunnel or path mastered in no time, finally chased him out, and at that time, he was no longer easy prey, they learn quickly, he came back for an encore one time, then that was it, eastern cottontail are abundant here.

Wonder if it is related to the late hot-streak the Midwest got... because I just saw a toad the other day that was probably only about 1 1/2 inches long - seems late for baby toads too.

I've been seeing wooly worms lately too. Not sure if more or less than usual. Won't take long for those bunnies to grow up. We have a lot of rabbits too, but I work to that end. Nothing better than beagle music. Run dogs almost every day unless it's raining or too hot.

Was working on a tractor outside the shop the other day, saw sugar, my four footed best friend playing with something. Walked over, and it was a very young rabbit, don"t know where she got it, but like you, kinda late to see young ones.

I live in Clay County, orchard is in Clinton County, near Lathrop. We have had a shortage of rabbits the last few years, so I was really happy to see them and sure hope they survive.

Much to my daughter"s dismay, even this late in the year our cat brings us a continuous stream of the cutest little baby bunnies - squeaking away for mercy.

I don"t think he can catch the bigger ones.

He eats the things like popcorn.

I try to save them when I can for my daughter"s sanity, but short of locking the cat up, it"s a losing battle.
