Looking to buy this M37 army truck,Can anyone tell me anything about this truck? Is this a good vehicle to tow with? Can you still get parts?
Thanks George

With 80 horsepower and 5.83 axle ratios - it would be an awful slow tower for use on a public highway.

I've got a 60s Power Wagon with a 318 V8 and 4.88 axles and it too is a very slow tow rig. Also gets around 8 MPG empty. Great farm truck, but awful highway rig.

All kinda parts being remade for those. I saw a full catalog from somewhere that specilized in those parts.Don't remember the name.

They sell pretty high any more. Best suited for off road.

The military should've kept this vehicle and installed the 318 V8 engine. The Gama Goat was a piece of junk and Lady Bird Johnson held the most stock. The M37 out performed it all mobility tests. The testing on the Gama Goat was longer than when we tested M1A1 Abrams. We tested two pilot models, one made by GM and Chrysler. I was told last week the M1A1 is going to be up weighted to 80 tons. Here's a picture of the M16 heavy dynamometer used for testing. There's another heavy absorption trailer used for extra load. Hal

They have a very distinctive sound......can hear them a mile away. One we had on a mission in Puerto Rico developed an odd condition. The shift lever popped out, so instead of chaining and padlocking the steering wheel, we just took the shifter with us.

I have restored MANY of them, ebay is where you can get lots of the parts for it. Not enough hp to do much towing except for off road. Need anything, let me know.

Personally, I love them, a fun toy.

I had to work on those in the Army, If you get 1, buy extra Master cylinders, you will need them. They were constantly bad, caused several guys to get hurt. They would NOT make a good truck for our highways.

That is the one truck everyone is looking for. Not fast and can't tow much. But if you need a good reliable truck around the farm. It is the one to get. Brake master cylinders were not the best and brakes squealed all the time you stopped.

I was a motor saregent in the guard. Worst day of my time in the guard. Was the day I had to turn all of mine in.Thank God I didn't have to put up with Gamma Goats

Hello indianageorge,

It would be great for farm or off road as others have said. Only problem I remember was the brakes. Lets just say you won't need a horn!
Put A little Detroit in it like a 4/53 and they will hear you coming for miles!

Guido.

Well you can still get parts as they broke down enough that you will need them. LOL They would be terrible for road towing. I bet they would not get 5-6 MPG if you put a trailer behind one of them. Even then you would not get there very fast.

Most military vehicles are ODD ball vehicles. They are built to spec and do not usually match any civilian vehicle. Had a few friends that tried to use old surplus Military trucks for grain trucks. They where always broken down.

Our Fire Dept. had one for a tanker for 15 years or so. It was very good off road but I remember that you had to really plan ahead for your stops.

Those are nice trucks. They are slow, but sure can do work. Parts are pretty easy, lots of surplus dealers. Engine parts are all available from NAPA for a complete rebuild. That motor doesn't have much horsepower, about 100, but there is lots of torque, and not too much you can do to make more power. They are reliable and tough engines, I have cars with the same engine and make many road trips in them. With the brakes, be sure everything is 100% right, and it not done recently, replace all the hoses and any rusty lines, along with rebuilt master and wheel cylinders for worry free travel.

(quoted from post at 03:30:32 10/05/13) we used to pull loaded silage wagons with ours, pretty easy to snap a rear axle shaft, S.O.P. was to run in 4wd!
I have looked and cannot find a picture of the M-17 3/4 ton truck. Anybody have a picture?

I had one left over from WWII for my use when stationed in Greece. Slow and Your head will spend as much time against the top as your butt will be on the seat. Worst riding thing I have ever been in. Will it get stuck, probably never.
