My daughter has her eye on a 2010 Subaru Impreza and was wondering if anyone has insight on this brand of autos?

We are one our second Outback, an 04. Had a 98 but got hit by a
pickup that ran a stop sign or we might still be driving it. We only
drive about 4500 miles a year on average so both were bought with
over 120k and have been quite reliable. They are great in the
winter, and around here they are quite plentiful. I think they are
made in Kentucky, or somewhere around that general part of the
country. They are not the most fuel efficient because of the AWD,
but not bad either.

Subarus are good cars, but they are a different breed of
Asian car. They are not trouble free as most would think of
a Toyota or Honda. They like being maintained almost like
a European car, but they tend to attract a different breed of
owner that wears the maintenance as a badge of honor.
The only thing that sticks out to me is their autos shift
different, they all feel the same, though. They have timing
belts that need changed at certain intervals. They can be
hard to find a shop that is not afraid of them. The awd
works great in the wet and slush, but they are not off road
machines that their commercials suggest.

my daughter has a 2001 forrester with 250,000 miles on it, and its still going strong uses no oil and runs fine
it runs 200 miles every week going to colledge

Subaru has an assembly plant in Indiana. We have bought
three in the past 22 years. First one ("91 Legacy) was 10
years old when it got totaled in a rollover by our oldest son.
Second one (01 Legacy) was totaled when a van in the
opposite lane turned left in front of it and got totaled. Bought
an identical one that our youngest now drives.
Mechanically they are very reliable. Parts are readily available
and not bad to work on. Would be really great if they would
bring their turbo diesel to North America, because I don"t think
their gas mileage is all that great.
Yes, timing belt needs to be changed every so often, but I
have done three and they are not so bad.

Made in Indiana, or Iowa,or Idaho,or Ohio, or Oklahoma...one of them I or O states. All citizens know their geogrophy. All them states look alike.

Quirky, state car of Vermont...can't trust them blue state folks much. If they like the car it must be weird.

With AWD expect 22-24 MPG. Nice cars, do the scheduled maintainance.

Tramway Guy! When the Boeing Co. inherited the Frederickson plant from the contractors which built it for them, we also inherited some equipment they had used around the construction site. along with several golf carts, and EZGO scooters was an Isuzu diesel pickup, the body was beat up , but the basic truck worked real well. Subaru should grab that engine for their use.

I remember when the first ones came over here in about 1972-73 as I worked in an Olds/AMC/Jeep dealership body shop and they were one of the first dealers over here to get them. Little pancake 4 in a tin box and if I remember right were rear engine/drive. Pile of junk back then but have came a long ways. Hard to believe that the "Big Three" in sales are Toyota , GM and VW in that order now.

Had three of them 250K miles each, and drove them like a Jeep which is what we have now. Drove in 14" of snow and the problem was keeping the snow off the windshield. 82-93-03. Watched them unload some in 1973 off of the train.

We have had several over the years, including 2 in "the fleet" (when all three kids were at home and driving, and we had 5 cars). 2 of the kids still have Subes, daughter won't have anything else. Great cars.

My son has a 2003 Impreza WRX. Nice car. It has some miles piled on it. I did have to replace the clutch, which was the easiest clutch I have ever done. Well designed. Boxer engine sounds a little funny. Overall, I'd recommend them.

I'd had a 85, 87, 88, and 91 4WD wagon. All were
good utilitarian cars that would go places at
times that full size 4WD trucks would not. Front
CV joints went bad often and many small electrical
problems. 1.8 engines.

Then got a 1995 AWD Impreza with the 2.2 engine
with 4 speed automatic. Still have it with
260,000 miles and original exhaust system.
Problably one of the best Subarus ever made. Only
major repairs in 260K miles are wheel bearings.

Then got a 2002 Impreza Outback AWD wagon with the
2.5. Worse Subaru I ever owned. Recalled for rust
problems and computer glitches. Two wheel
bearings failed at 80K miles. Head gaskets failed
at 120K miles. Clutch at 110K miles. Two exhaust
systems by 120K miles. Many annoying electrical
problems and overall - poorly engineered. Too
much engine for the gearing and spun 2800 RPM @ 65
MPH in 5th-overdrive.

Then got a 2005 Forester and if anything - it was
even worse then the 2002 Impreza.

I'm all done with Subarus. They were great
utilitarian cars that got ruined in my opinion.
Their "love" commercials could make a maggot puke.

Hey, maybe they've gotten better now? I'll never
find out. I'd take a Ford Escape over any Subaru.
More reliable, handles better, and better fuel
mileage.

My wife has a 2013 Impreza. 35000 or so miles on it, been looking for an issue to take it in for warranty work, but can't find any. It is the best driving car I have ever driven when the roads are snow covered. She drives into the snow belt for work, and this car fits the niche well as a commuter. The service checklist isn't that different from the Honda it replaced except the Sub has a couple differentials that need checked.

Don't know about the 2010, but the 12-13 are Japanese built.

The 2.2 and the 2.5 single overhead cam engines are good motors, but need regular maintenance, which can be expensive. They also go through front drive axles, but reman axles are cheep. They also will blow head gaskets on occasion. Stay away from the 3.0 boxer six.

Thanks for all the replies. They are very typical of auto ownership. Some average, some bad reports and glowing recommendations.
She has a 05 Focus now with 128k miles and will be doing to metro driving for her job and wants all wheel drive for some reason. The Focus has been stellar and we are a Ford family. About 9 Fords in immediate family. 02 Escort with 208k and no major repair so the Subaru is out of my comfort zone. I'm going to relay this info to her including the not too great mpg.
Thanks again. Happy Motoring.

Wife has had 3 now. Other than being a PITA to work on some things (like changing a headlight in her outback), they've been solid cars. Even took her old Forrester (her first subaru)out one day in the snow to see if it was any good. Performed way better than I expected.

Many are made in Lafayette Indiana (knocked the socks off my dad when he derided me for buying a Japanese car.
I believe in them. They are reliable and hold value better than many. Well built vehicles and made in zero land fill plants!! Jim

I can't speak to the Impreza, but I have a 2012 Forester with about 25,000 miles on it now. I've only had one issue with a "software glitch" that had to be reprogrammed. Other than that it has been a great car. I guess something that new shouldn't really have trouble (which is why I bought it).

Our first road trip was out to CO to see my uncle. His first question was, "did you get a turbo?" When I answered, "no", he said, "good." He is a mechanic and I guess has had to replace a few over the years. He said they were mostly on neglected/abused cars, but they can be pricey to replace. Turbo is Italian for "costs more to fix".

I liked it over other cars (Toyota, Honda, Chevy, Ford) we dove because it just seemed so much simpler (room under the hood). Everything I wanted without a lot of extra stuff I would need to fix later when it broke. It's not exactly "plush", but it has everything I need.

It does really well in the snow. Took it out in a "Stay Home!" snowstorm (well, it was bad for Central KS), and made it to my destination 70 miles away without a problem. Plenty of other cars were in the ditch on my way. The AWD on a Subaru is different than other makes, and in my opinion it is better.

There is a "hippie fart-sniffer" stigma with the Subaru. If that bothers your daughter, put an NRA sticker on it!

Had a 1982 Subaru GL & ran it for 285,000 miles before the engine was worn out. Put three clutches in it, one radiator, two sets of front brakes, one set of rear brakes and one front wheel bearing.

Well she bought the Impreza and the next day she texted me and after sleeping on it she had second thoughts. I texted her back and said it's just buyers remorse and that I've had it before.
