Pondering another post

I got to thinking about a post from yesterday where the comment was made that the drive train on these newer cars and pickups would far outlast the electronics.

Do you think some ingenious inventor will come up with a simple conversion kit to change some of these vehicles to manual controls,or maybe a less expensive electronic aftermarket "plug and play" kit to at least keep some of these better built heavy pickups going?

It has been tried and the FEDS shut them down. When you start messing with the EPA, you've got trouble. If you don't believe me, look at my state of WV and the coal mines.

Before I even read welding man's comment, I was thinking, If these controls are connected with emissions or fuel mileage in any way, the
Feds aren't going to let anyone change them!
It is a good idea though.

Simple answer is no. To many things control but the ECM on most newer cars and if we ever get hit by an EMP there will be no roads to drive on due to to many dead cars clogging up the roads. Another reason to try to keep at least one running car or truck with out all that electronic crap.

I read that post too, and in most cases electronics will outlast anything mechanical.
No moving parts/friction, no bearings to wear out, no rust.
About the only thing that kills electronics anymore is heat or moisture.
Yes, I realize you have both in an automotive application.
Many electronic ignitions from the 70's still running fine though.

I would bet the electronics will outlast the mechanical, but in case they do not there are third party controllers out there.
