Welding Plastic Gas Tank On a BS Engine

Hi,

I have a busted plastic gas tank ( don't know how bad as I haven't taken it off yet , but can see small crack at top of tank )on a Briggs and Stratton engine mounted on a pressure washer . the engine is a Quantum 60 XTL ( ? ) engine , app. a 5 hp engine . I plan on buying a cheap plastic welder from Harbor Freight to weld it back with . My question is - What kind of plastic is the tanks made out of ? Will the weld hold ( I know that it also depends on how good of a welder I am ) , if welded properly ? Anyone have any experience welding plastic ? Any tips or ideas ? Thank you for any and all help .

I have used the HF plastic welder, and had some success, but considering the vibration a Briggs engine produces I would buy another one. They are pretty common and many small engine shops have used ones laying around.

I used JB Weld on a gas tank of a chainsaw and kept for 5 years and it never leaked in that time. Cleaned it good and sanded the plastic to rough it up before putting the JB Weld on.

I bought the HF welder (hot air gun) It comes with several choices of rod. Weld each piece of rod to a spot in the tank, to see which ones sticks, and will not pull off. Be careful don't over heat the material. Stan

I just had that problem with my wood splitter Briggs engine. Tried some Red Sealer that I had and it would not stick. Called the company and they said it won't work on plastic. Bought a used metal tank for $20 and made a mount for it after I sealed it. No more problems.

I just use a soldering iron. Usually the plastic 5 gallon pails are made out of will work. Also, possibly a piece of an old plastic gas can. Eliminating the vibration if you can will help.

Seal all is the answer. It is gas and oil imperious and sticks to anthing. I have used it to repair gsoline tanks and other stuff. Best deal and cheapest.

Yep just clean the area with some solvent and coat well. Apply again when dry and then when that dries use.
I get mine at Dollar General Store.

I remember the recall. I have a push mower with a Quantum 4 horse power Briggs and it was recalled and they took the primer bulb off of it because they were having trouble with them leaking.

I had a metal gas tank off a Case lawn tractor that had a large hole and the repairman at the shop told me to get a fiberglass gas tank repair kit made by Permatex, I did and it solved the problem, be sure to get the right one, they make a kit for plastic tanks or metal tanks. I let mine set up longer than suggested time by manufacturer.

They make a fiberglass repair kit for plastic or metal gas tanks, made by Permatex, be sure and get the right kit as they look alike on the rack.
I repaired a metal tank and it works great, I let mine set up longer than the recommended time.

Can't you epoxy or fiberglass it? I keep several types of JB weld, two part epoxy, and fiberglass around. If you need to add strenth there are several types of mesh you can put into the epoxy or JB weld.

Clean if up good, scuff it a little with sandpaper and clean it again and glue it.
