dash indicator light

question. Put a napa dash indicator light on my FIL's 9N when I switched to 12V alternator. The light never goes out unless I do a quick jump across the wires and it charges. Alternator is a Delco 10SI 3 wire.

I was told the napa light doesn't have enough resistance to activate the alternator.

On my Case 800 i used a Case dash light which takes regular small auto bulbs and it works great.

I know i can drop the light and just put in a diode but want the light so he knows if its charging or not.

Does anyone have a source or part number for an indicator light they've used?

Thanks.

This is along the lines as Bob noted, if its an LED light versus a small incandescent indicator bulb, IT MAY HAVE TOO MUCH RESISTANCE to allow sufficient current flow to externally excite the alternator. While it doesn't take a lot of current to excite the alternator, those LED's are of such high resistance (thus low current draw) its like you didn't hook up anything.

Instead of an LED Id just use a small indicator automotive bulb.

Thanks. John,
That is whay i'm looking (small indicator light socket) for but can't seem to find anything by googling.

That's what i have on the Case and it works but the dash came with the lights (factory) so I can not use that source.

52... THANKS for pointy out my error! I REALLY blew that one! It's been corrected1!

Bob, and that will get worse as you grow older lol My fingers get ahead of my brain sometimes

Hook a a small auto bulb(I can't remember the #) in series with that small dash indicator bulb and hide it where it can't be seen, that little light is too small to do the job.

Early 9Ns had an 'ignition on' dash lamp that stayed on whenever the tractor was running. Usually when a 12V conversion is done, the light gets by-passed.

I have plenty of pilot lite sockets in the shop but there is little business these days so I close the shop in winter.
